I have read some great lists of things you can feed your snails, seems the little guys will eat anything! But I noticed there doesen't appear to be any lists of foods you shoulden't feed them. Are there any foods they shouldent eat?

Thank you everyone, I hope this helps others out too. You easily think you can feed them anything with such a varied diet.

Why? I have observed snails eating onion stems in my back yard which are stronger than leeks and obviously the same family. They stripped them bare and they have more of a sting than leeks. Animals don't like onions generally, and I know the juice can be used as a natural deterrent to pests but I've not heard of it being dangerous. Can anyone back this up with proof or an account of them being harmful? Rice is probably best to avoid, but it is different than millet and pasta which are proven to be dangerous and I've yet to hear of any problems, again I'd like to know for sure. And celery, does anyone know why?

well i've only said leek because some people reported it,
Celery has proved to be ok in small amounts a bit like pasta but i wouldn't take the chance, it has known to kill snails

With the onion family, and it might have been celery too, I was told to be careful with foods that might disguise it like baby food. On their own I've seen the same as Sarah, people have said it's harmed/can harm them.

I've fed mine rhubarb before, although they didn't eat much it, i didn't see any ill-effects Although, regards the celery, one of my snails died after i gave celery to them . Can't be sure it was because of that tho (as i didn't just give it to that one and the others didn't appear effected) but about a week later i read (in an ad on ebay i think ) that it was harmful.

One of mine seemed very unhappy after getting honey on his body. I rinsed it off and set him back in his tank and he didnt move hours afterwards!

Oranges. Reason being is that my snail had a reaction to the juice from an orange segment and the acid burnt away some of his skin. It has now almost healed up, but he still has the scars. Of course, this may only be with my snail. Others have found no problems with oranges, but it's just something to keep in mind.

Maybe...but so far that snail hasn't had any problems. After all, it was a small puddle of orange juice that had collected within the food dish, and he was sitting in it.
Good idea though!

Thanks Im sure it might help be a compromise between folks having trouble with those fruits and the ones not having problems. I'll go ahead and soak mine just in case.

if it was only a bit then theres less likely to be any problems if there were to be in the first place

i've been using the food list provided in petsnails and that includes orange but higher up this thread it says about the orange juice burning a snail? which is it? should i worry about any of the other items listed there?
i can't remember where the list is but i got to it from one of the forum links you're supposed to read if you're new.

It seems like it's trial and error with some things I've read not to give them celery but some people have given theirs celery and I know some people give theirs orange and the snails have been alright.
