Hello everyone, Found an injured garden snail which has damaged a big part of his shell. He is fully intact and is out as we speak climbing up the side of his container we are keeping him in (amazingly). What can we do, if anything, to try and help this poor little guy recover? Seems like he fell off a metal rail which we found him under. Please see pictures. Attachments:

He is fully intact and is out as we speak climbing up the side of his container we are keeping him in (amazingly). What can we do, if anything, to try and help this poor little guy recover? Seems like he fell off a metal rail which we found him under. Please see pictures. Keep him in a small, shallow container so he can't climb too much (or hurt himself further by falling). Keep it very moist and spray the snail regularly to try and prevent him from drying out. Make sure that he has a good source of calcium available so that he can repair his shell if possible. There are ways to attempt shell repairs, but it might be tricky on such a small snail. It may be better to just look after him and hope he can grow the shell back on his own. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your response!
I am doing exactly as youve told me to already. He is very active and climbing all over the place (shallow container like you said - though he hasnt fallen at all).
I am very amazed at this little fella, it seems as though all his organs are untouched, and just the shell was damaged which is both good and bad of course.
Is there a chance he can repair this type of damage? He is very moist and not drying out at all, and exploring a lot.
Kind wishes Snailwhale xxo

Unless the shell is completely crushed or completely comes off, they seem to have a good chance if they're kept moist and have lots of calcium to eat. Hope he makes it

Well lets hope he is one of them snails!
I forgot to mention he has also eaten the lip of his shell. Im not sure if this is because it was broken/sharp so he literally just edged it off but you can clearly see he has done this. I also watched him removing part of his broken shell as well.
He is currently not moving about, but he is plenty moist and isnt retracted hes just sat with his head out (but no eyes/feelers). My pet snails often do this so Im hoping its nothing to be concerned about!
I hope he survives, nature is tough so I am wishing he makes it! Thanks again Snailwhale xxo

Make sure he gets as much calcium as possible, he might be nibbling his shell to reabsorb the calcium. Or as you say, just filing it down a bit. You could provide him with limestone flour, eggshells, cuttlefish, crushed oystershells or reptile-type calcium suppliment - if you only have cuttlefish, you could scrape some off to form a powder that might encourage him to eat more. Powder-type calcium can be sprinkled on food or the substrate or added to water, eggshells can be powdered too in a pestle and mortar but will not be water soluble I don't think. Obviously it is possible to overdo it and normally it's best to let them regulate their own calcium intake rather than lacing everything with calcium suppliment but for a short time, this little guy needs all the help he can get :) Make sure he gets some nutritious food as well, since he has a lot of healing to do - a bit of fish food (flakes, damped into paste) might be a good boost for him or sweet potato, courgette, or some crushed seeds. Good luck!

He had a big piece of cuttlefish, but I have taken your advice and given him fresh food peeled finely with cuttlefish scraping/dust on it. He was moving like crazy for the first several hours we had him, but now hes just sat still not doing much. He is definately alive because when i mist him he recoils more, but no sign of him popping his head out I am wondering if there is some safe substance with anti-bacterial properties that I can rinse him in. I heard of metafix (i think thats how its spelt) in a very diluted form, but I have checked and no where in Denmark seems to sell it. Might ask my husband to call the exotic vet and see what they say - it cant hurt can it! I want this little guy to make it so much, will keep on hoping and wishing xxo

I don't think anything antibacterial would be wise in these cases it's best to try not to stress them just provide food, if misting is making him retract maybe mist the surrounding areas so as not to stress him more - if he retracts deeply he could damage the shell more or start to push sections off. Don't move or touch him more than necessary as it could cause more damage he's best left alone now to repair (bar providing food and calcium obviously). Also naturally he's unlikely to be doing much at this time they're more active early morning, late evening and at night. so not being very active currently is a good sign he's behaving as he should, and resting should do him good Best of luck

Well lets hope you are right and he is just behaving normally. I think due to the damage on his shell he cant fully retract, but I am very gently misting with a spray bottle (think i was spraying slightly too much earlier) so hopefully that will be alright. Heres for hoping he wakes up at a natural hour to munch on some cuttlefish/food! Thanks for your responses xxo Snailwhale xxo

Hey guys. Thanks for your support. I am very sad to say this little guy passed away We were so upset, we thought because he was intact (organ wise) that he had a great chance. But it seems it wasn't meant to be We sent him (Hercules as we called him) to his final resting place in a river not far from us. I hope he rests in peace and is enjoying vast amounts of his favourite food as we speak! Thanks again for your help/advice and support. Snailwhale

I'm so sorry he didn't make it. My first snail had a similarly crushed shell and didn't make it either, it was heartbreaking. You did a great job trying to help him, sometimes the damage is just too much though.
