Hey guys, As I was feeding my tiger snails achatina achatina I saw a white tube coming from one, but not going anywhere i.e the other as a mating process. It looked like a rolled up cabbage which was white reaching about 3 inches, Does anyone know what this is? (hope the pic helps) Many thanks, Alex Attachments:

Did it suck back inside the snail?

Something very similar happened to one of my margies a few months ago. They didn't seem to be mating but there was a huge white tube very similar to that between them and one of them was rasping on it. After I tried to move them apart, it had disappeared by the time I looked back in the tank. I'm afraid I can't enlighten you as to what it is or why it's there, but if it's disappeared or retracted and the snail is acting normally, I wouldn't worry.

yes snailspace it was sucked back up and is acting normal, after speaking to a few people in uni, it seems to be their reproductive organ, thanks for the help guys

I think these snails are beautiful and have a chance now to get one.
I have an adult retic and a fulica. I have a bit of a difficult box to heat for the moment so i keep them at room temperature which is pretty warm and spray warm water in. the soil doesnt get very warm though which is cold on their flesh. When its a cold day i put them on my bed with a heat mat, its the only way the heat actually warms the box.
Soon i'll be moving, i'll have a flat rather than just my bedroom and a new tank. Which means i can get more humid temperatures.
Should i avoid moving a tiger in with a fulica? Would a Archachatina Marginata suturalis be better? I need to read up on them more though

I don't know about the marginata, but I have fulica in with my tigers and they seem to be getting on well. the only problem that crops up when mixing snails is hybridization

Have you had any eggs since the rolled up cabbage?

Im pretty sure you cant get hybrids with these. I know a few species that have such as fulica and rodatzis(sp) which is the jadatzi ( could have that muddled)
But generally separate snail species wont combine

glitter, the commonly named fulica and rodatzi are the same species anyway. the clue is in the full names the first bit is the genus to which they belong (a group - known as a taxon- to separate the snails further) in this case the genus is Achatina (with a capital letter) the second part is the species name - always with a small first letter- for tigers this is achatina, (this type of repeating of the name is called a tautonym). so Achatina fulica is the species fulica from the genus Achatina. now the rodatzi is a colour form of a subspecies of Achatina fulica called hamelli (ssp is used to stand for subspecies) so it is Achantina fulica ssp hamelli the yellow form of this is rodatzi so it is Achantina fulica ssp hamelli var rodatzi now that's quite a mouthfull so we shorten it to rodatzi in non scientific writing. so it is still a breeding between different subspecies of the same species. in the pet trade there's been so much interbreeding of the 'standard' fulica and the hamelli subspecies that most 'rodatzis' that occur probably aren't 'pure' anyway a similar thing can occur with the different subspecies of Archachatina marginata. to my knowledge there isn't any record of different snail species hybrdising (but that is just off the top of my head)

Yes, as Muddy rightly says Rodatzi, Jadatzi, Hamillei, Jade are all names for the various colour and/or genetic lines of Achatina fulica, so when they breed it is not different to a tabby cat breeding with a long-haired white cat.
Also just to add to what Muddy has said I have been informed that it simply isn't possible for snail hybridisation. I don't like to say 'never' on this, as nature sometimes surprises us, but it is considered impossible. The closest thing that I know of personally are two sub-species of Archachatina marginata - A.marginata ovum and A.marginata sutralis do mate and produce young. I wouldn't class these as seperate species though, but I believe there is a greater difference between these two subspecies than the difference between two colours of fulica. Perhaps it's like a tabby cat mating with a Scottish Wild Cat or something?

I'm unsure what breed to keep in with my Retic and fulica then .. I'm trying to keep separate species. But i would like a large snail. Recently my iredalei died and i wouldn't like to have another the same as baby as i would feel as though I'm replacing her. I'll still be saving some snails from Brixton so i guess i'll have a short amount of time bringing some tigers back to health. Wont be selling them on for profit

Im going to get a tiger, they're too beautiful to miss the chance. If i think its a bit too cold i will make changes to the environment to suit them all, or seperate the tiger and get him some company.
So excited! Anyone brought from bugs2go?

I have noticed that my tiger snail sometimes skips eating when having growing spurt. So I always put him on food if I haven't seen him nibble food at all and example last night he eat huge piece of mushroom after I put him on food. Maybe I have start to put food next to his sleeping place maybe he remember then eat more often. Weird fella.

Im heartbroken.... my 8 month old tiger snail died on wednesday night. i just found him dead in his tank. He was so flamin beautiful and im worried that ive done something wrong. i know tigers are not so easy to keep but i really thought i was doing ok seeing as id had him for about 6 months and he'd been fine all this time.
I understood his needs and regularly did quick searches on the internet to make sure he was being kept correctly but im now looking for more information on this breed before i get another tiger snail so if anyone has any info then please pass it my way.

Vicki, I'm so sorry for your loss. Sometimes our snails will pass away for no reason we can see, even when we have done our best to care for them.
Rest in peace, Malika.
