So my Nemoralis finally laid some eggs, of course it was after I'd given up on them ever laying eggs XD So I should say yay I found hatchlings My question is will they all have the same stripes/coloring as the parent or will there be variations? Of the Nemoralis I have in the tank, none of them have the same striping or coloring combos so will I possibly get a mixture of shells or..? I know all shells are different in their own way, I mean like some having only one stripe and another having like 3 stripes or some having yellow shells and others having brown? (depending of course who was involved in the mating as I have no idea) Thanks for any insight

Hi red, Yes, you will get a mixture of combinations. I described the genetics on my banded snail page: www.weichtiere.at/english/gastropoda/terrestrial/banded_snails.html. It depends on the genome of your snails what their offspring will look like. While brown is the dominant colour, in nature it is quite rare because the snails are easily seen. So you might probably have yellow and pink snails with and without bands. Pink is dominant over yellow and no bands is dominant over bands, there one band is dominant over three and five bands. That should give you some idea. Kind regards Robert

Thanks so much! Now if I only knew who had laid eggs I'd have an idea of what I'm geting!

Of the two batches that hatched (40+ total) they all seem to have a single brown stripe developing... I'd bet anything they'll all be yellow too XD. Still.waiting for one last batch of eggs to hatch, hopefully they'll be different than these two. Really hoping my pink shelled Gir mated

So I found yet another batch of eggs and I'm curious as to the odds that these are all from the same snail or mate pair. The first two batches hatched within 48hours of each other, I did consider they were from the same batch but they originated from different areas on the same side of the tank plus 60 (plus?) eggs seemed a bit much for a lil single batch. The third batch of eggs I found while cleaning their tank a day or two later and started hatching june2-3. This fourth batch I just found last night judging by the color of the eggs were just very recently laid, prob three day ago max. Oh the first batch was found around May 20th (I think), since I'm pretty sure their first pictures were taken a day or two later on the 21-22nd of May (only posted 23rd pics on forums).

I used to think that a snail laid its clutch of eggs all in one go, without stopping, from start to finish. But recently one of my aspersas laid a few in one spot one day, then a few more in another spot the next day, and another small batch in yet a different spot the following day. If I hadn't seen the snail actually laying the separate batches myself and had just found the separate batches of eggs I would have suspected that multiple snails had laid them.
So I think what I'm getting at is that it can be hard to say for certain who did what, when, and with whom.

I get what you're saying and understand I can never know for sure unless I catch them in the act so to speak. I guess I was just more curious as to the odds that all four batches easily totaling over 100 with 20-35 eggs per batch are from the same snails or mate pair? Could this species lay that many in such a sort time span if it was the same snail with no ill effects like becoming too weak themselves type thing? I'm honestly starting to think they really are from same snail or same mate pair (damn yellow looking one stripe > ). Its very discouraging to have so many that all basically look alike. I mean there is a few with two stripes or none at all but 5 vs like 95... I keep hoping the yellow tint of their shells will magically turn pink or brown lol I'm tempted to get a third tank and either keep the hatchlings I decide to keep separate or isolate a matepair with the shell colour I desire and hope they have eggs.

In theory, a very healthy and robust snail could probably lay several clutches of eggs like yours without ill effects. Getting another tank might be a good way to go, because you can better see what's going on and have more control over it.

Two of my Rose cepaea mated and the fist batch hatched today I placed the babies in a baby tank yet the babies continue to crawl to the top of the tank and I keep brushing them back down where they have everything they need besides when they crawl up the tank they become dry, I am not sure what to do about this and worried about their survival and I also have 4 or more egg deposits that will be hatching within the week. My first batch amounted to about 200 baby snails. I had planned to put them out in the garden in spring. But if they continue this action of crawling up to the inside of the top of the tank and just staying there and not eating and drying out they just won't survive. Any help with this would really, really be appreciated. Thank You Vallery December 01 2011
