Hi everyone! I'm back in Canada and I have started acquiring some snails here and there. I will use this thread to show off what I've got and probably ask for advice! This is my first bunch - I found them near a small "lake" (pond?) in the decomposing wood. There are 4 in total, but they're quite hard to locate amongst leaves and woodchips and more leaves I am going to go snail collecting around the river as well, when I get the chance. I hope to find bigger ones (it is quite dry where I live) Question though: are snails okay with calcium powder? Or do they prefer solid chunks (such as cuttlefish bone)?

Ooh they are pretty! Think they are Oxychilus though, unless Canadian Discus snails are darker and shinier than our UK ones! Very lovely though!

Hi everyone I got a bunch more snails from Valerie (vallery) from Ontario today! They're just starting to explore the tank, and it's incredibly adorable. I'm so excited. I have a whole snail park! I'm going to try to take some more (and better!) pictures.

Soooo my Oxychilus (the little black snails) had babies. I found a clutch of eggs the other day, and at first blamed it on the slugs that managed to sneak in with some leaves (now I have 4 of those guys as well), but now that the eggs are hatching, it's evident that they're snail babies. I'm not sure what to feed the babies! They are living in a small plastic bucket (away from parents), I put some baby lettuce leaves in with them. Perhaps I should find some rotting wood for the babies as well? They're sooo tiny! My plan is to grow them up a bit and release near the lake. I don't think I have enough space for 40 snails Does anyone have any advice?

Fish food for oxy babes. Flakes or pellets, just moisten them thoroughly first and watch the babes munch away.
I'm waiting to see if my two oxy eggs hatch. Unfortunately the other adult died so I'm hoping they mated and I get more eggs at some point.
And I love these sneaky slugs getting smuggled in... I had some end up inside the house and now I have hundred. Love them little things, they got personality even if they're a bit lackluster in the looks department.

Thanks I will try that. It's too bad about your oxys I only have 2. I didn't really think they'd go crazy and overpopulate the tank. The slugs are so sneaky! I don't even know when they got there. Because I thoroughly checked what I put in and I'm pretty certain I didn't see sluggers. Maybe they were eggs in the original wood chunk I brought with the snails. They seem to be about the same age, definitely same species (all kind of pink). You're right though, they do have personality. They like climbing on top of the snails and hitching rides with them. Even though I'm pretty sure the slugs move way faster... but nonetheless.

They don't seem to want the fish flakes. Maybe wrong flakes? I was giving tropical fish flakes. I tasted them (lol) and they seemed pretty plain to me. I put some old wood into their box. Lets see if they like it.

Awheee little cuties! Great to see a magnified picture, the differences between adults and juveniles can be observed clearly with these.

The babies are slowly growing up - I no longer need a magnifying glass to see their eyes. They seem to like cucumber and calcium, but not much more. Here are my bigger snails, I took this picture while cleaning their tank today They like piggy back rides on each other, it's really quite silly. The slugs also like to sit on the bigger snails and go along for adventures onto the fern.

Hi Mewkitty Your pictures are great. Everyone looks very healthy and happy. Thank you for sharing them. I love the ones that are on the sweet potato love the contrast of color and how your snails really stand out in that picture. What type of plant is that in your snailarium in the second picture on your thread with the cepaeas? Vallery

Hi mewkitty , Your pictures are amazing. I would love to see more. Have they laid any eggs yet since you got them? vallery Yup, I actually just saw a snail lay these eggs. He (er, she?) did me a favour by digging a hole right next to the tank wall so I can watch them develop and hatch. There are 4 of them (or maybe 5, I can't quite see). I first saw the snail with his head in the ground and was just thinking to myself "oh goodness, what is that snail doing, I hope he's not stuck". Few hours later, the snail has run away, and the eggs have appeared I'm really looking forward to watching these hatch and develop. Is there anything I should know? Should I take the babies away from their parents? Here's a picture of my baby Cepaea (vallery should remember this little guy ). He is sitting on a mushroom. A very picky eater he is... Also, the oxys... They grew up, but the mortality was fairly high. I had about 10 survivors, and a lot of them I took back to their natural habitat since they got plenty big. The parents, on the other hand, keep laying eggs everywhere in their tank. Everytime I go to clean it out, I'm surprised by yet another clutch, but I just let those develop so far. They are fairly small, and the tank (it's a separate tank from the Cepaea snails) isn't being overrun. But we will see. I hope to release a lot of them before fall, so that I don't run into problems in the winter. I have also done renovations of my main snail tank, and I will hopefully get lots of pictures of that tomorrow.

He came back today and laid about 20 more eggs (I don't even know) so far. I will probably be feeding the majority of these to my oxys. Hmmm. While I would like to keep them all, it's just unrealistic if they all keep having babies in these numbers (and they will, because I keep catching them mating here and there). Here is the tank photo I promised, as well: Some oxys came out to eat during cleaning today. They must have had some new babies (and you can see them in the photo!). Despite the crazy contrast, they're just nomming on apple.

I've been gone from here for so long! But I am back with baby snail pictures I completely missed this clutch and they must have all hatched. Which is pretty crazy honestly. Anyway, I'll be keeping these and releasing them in the spring/summer. I lost all of my slugs in the past few months I don't know what has happened to them. I changed the soil and fed them food (and I would see them eat it), but bah. They laid some eggs, but I don't know if anything will come out of those.
