Over the years I've fed my snails lettuce, carrots, apples, pears, cucumber, cauliflower, broccoli, strawberries, grapes, string bean pods, yellow carrots, red kidney bean leaves, apple leaves, radishes, spinach (bad idea) and cantaloupe several times, so I decided to try two new things this month - sunflower seeds and bananas! First day of the banana experiment My brown lip and neohelix albolabris tasting it Flamed tigersnails trying it It wasn’t too long before they all left it, but let’s see how much they’ll eat by tomorrow. The next dayI guess temperate snails don’t like bananas very much… Let’s have a closer look There happens to be some evidence that they did eat a little, but not much These look like faces to me…

And now for the sunflower seeds! I’ve actually tried this already earlier with these guys, but didn’t get any pictures. This time I tried it again with the snails in my other container and did get pictures! Day 1Mashed sunflower seeds. Ugh! I should have mashed them longer and made it soggier… Ah well. The snail arrangement Close-ups of the arrangements Eating The next dayHmmmmm… Interesting. Some poops here and there, but it seems like they didn’t enjoy it as much as the flamed tigersnails did. I found this rosy guy next to pooped out sunflower seed mush on the container’s lid. And so there you have it! The results (and pictures ) aren’t too good, but I’m still interested in experimenting with pumpkin seeds next week to see how they’ll like it. This time I’ll put it in both of my containers on the same day, mash the seeds finer, make it soggy or even let it soak and get pictures of both groups on day 1 and 2.

Interesting. I've tried banana with my snails once - they didn't like it. Sunflower seeds are on the other hand one of they favorites. I never care to crush the seeds; it doesn't seem to matter and the snails look so extremely cute while eating the seeds! Of all my snails, the Limicolarias seem to love the seeds the most, but I've seen all my different species eat them. My largest A. reticulatas (unfortunately not here anymore) seem to eat the seeds almost without chewing (could see whole seeds in their poo), so for larger species I'd mash the seeds to make sure they would get the nutrition.

Thanks for the response! The species that I keep are much smaller than african land snails, so mashing the seeds and mixing it with water makes it easier for them to lick it up based on what I've observed.

I keep and have kept smalle species like Pleurodonte isabella, Cepaea nemoralis and Cepaea hortensis. They were all able to eat un-mashed seeds, but you are probably right that it is easier for them to eat them mashed. I use sunflower seeds for holiday food mostly, and they spoil quite fast if they a mashed, while whole they may just start to grow

Because of that, I'm forced to clean out the mixture in no more than 24 hours or else I face the consequences of an intense stench!

I've had tomato mold in 24 hours... yuck. I've also had apple stay good for 3 days, which was weird.

I know, it was gross. The snails avoided it from the start... wonder if it had started to mold already, or just picky snails?
