My oh my! My original intention was to get this posted the following week after the previous banana and sunflower seed experiments, but I’ve been busy and time didn’t permit me to get it done. Anyways, in this experiment both of the snail groups in my two containers were fed a pumpkin seed mash on the same day to get more details at the same time.
Day 1
Pumpkin seed mash before getting mixed with water
Pumpkin seed mash mixed
The groups tested
Snail arrangement in the blue lid container
Looks like some people would rather eat their own shell… this is gonna go great!
“Crawling over my roommate’s back is much better than this strange substance!” said peach shelled snail.
Let’s see if things will be better over in the white container!
Not too bad! With the exception of that yellow five banded brat-on-a-wall, the others (even its brown shelled counterpart!) are trying it out.
Overview of the two containers.
You………….
Day 2
Seems like there wasn’t a lot of food eaten. Perhaps less was eaten than with the sunflower seeds.
A look inside the white lid container
A look inside the blue lid container.
As you can tell from the captions, this experiment was worse than the test with the sunflower seeds. Some snails did eat, but even the snails that enjoyed the sunflower seeds didn’t like the pumpkin seeds as much. Oh, another thing! I forgot to write a general summary of how well the experiments went between the species.
I’m measuring how well these experiments went by stating one or a combination of the following: Terrible, Poor, Fair, Good, Great or Excellent.
Banana experiment
Flamed tigersnails: Fair
Neohelix albolabris: Fair
Brown lipped snails: Terrible
Sunflower seed experiment
Flamed tigersnails: Great
Neohelix albolabris: Excellent
Brown lipped snails: Fair
Pumpkin seed experiment
Flamed tigersnails: Poor-Fair borderline
Neohelix albolabris: Fair
Brown lipped snails: Terrible
Acorn Squash leaf experiment*
Flamed tigersnails: Good
Neohelix albolabris: Fair?
Brown lipped snails: Poor
So up to date I've fed my snails: lettuce, carrots, apples, pears, cucumbers, cauliflower, broccoli, strawberries, grapes, string bean pods, yellow carrots, red kidney bean leaves, apple leaves, radishes, spinach (bad idea), cantaloupe pieces and now more recently bananas, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and acorn squash leaves*. What haven’t I tried yet but should try? Where could I improve? Let me know in the comments!
