I'm moving apartments and I signed a new rent contract today. Originally, the Terms and Conditions of the new contract read "No pets allowed". With a short talk with the landlord, I managed to get it to read "No pets allowed. Exception: Snail keeping allowed" instead. Hooray for these very quiet pets that don't shed hair, and only make a mess inside their very own tank! Snails are the best!

LOL, but I think when most landlords say "no pets" they typically mean things that bark, shed, squawk or roam around around the house, but it's good to be extra sure just in case.

Yeah, that's right. I'm thinking of getting very big snails such as Tigers at some point, and I was imagining my landlord coming to visit and getting an unexpected dirty look from a hand-sized exotic snail. The reaction would probably be "Whaaaat is that and what does it do?!". I decided to be completely honest, and also inform how harmless snails are, so I don't have to do it later in such an awkward situation.

That's why my current landlord is great, he's completely relaxed about my pets and the jungle of plants (although he does keep asking if they're for my research, no no these are my pet plants!) The best contract i ever had read "No animals or birds" i just looked at it for a while "urmmm does this mean i'm not allowed in the house? also if birds aren't animals what are they? plants? viruses? fungi? bacteria? etc" I assumed they meant no non human mammals or birds. since birds were no longer members of the animal kingdom i assumed snails weren't either

Jungles of pet plants are great. I've grown them myself too, and never met a landlord who had any questions about them. Though if I had something like carnivorous or very strongly smelling plants, it might be different. Hah, yeah, "no animals" is a weird rule.

Brilliant , Glad you got the snails as the exception to that rule. Umm I wonder if that also covers spiders as we have a whole troop of them living in old houses over here. I rented some where for a while n asked the land lord about the spiders as I didn't bring them, he just laughed n said yeah I get yr point. N then let me keep my cat there as long as I replaced anything damaged etc. The snails we had at that time lived mostly outside as they were native snails or there tank was bought in when the weather got cold n they lived in the laundry room. No one ever found out about them thankfully lol.
Now I've got my own place there r snails n animals everywhere, even the rabbits n chickens come inside if they get a chance, the rabbits with the rug rats the chickens of there own accord lol.

My soon-to-be ex-apartment has a lot of spiders, too. Last summer I had one Longlegs guarding my front door from anachrophobics on many days! I didn't mind them though. One time a small spider moved into a pest infested plant, made a web around it and ate every single unwanted bug. When they were all eaten, the spider collected his web (ate it maybe?) and moved away. I was only glad I didn't have to treat the plant with pesticide. Ahh, my moving in date approaches, can't wait! The snails will get a new tank too to celebrate the success in having them officially accepted. <3
