I thought I was a little strange being fascinated by snails. I found one a year ago with a damaged shell and looked after it and set it free in my garden. A year later I had a snail on my window sill to then realise it was the one I rescued, I recognised his healed shell. He's now been kept in a box with what he needs, daily lettuce, carrots, a bit of soil, shallow bowl of water and a hiding place. I checked him earlier and the part of the shell that had healed had come off it's a large patch at the back so his back end is exposed he's still active and eating. Do I remove soil and give his box a clean of all dirt, maybe leave it bare, mist it with water?? Will Gary be ok? I read somewhere about egg shells for calcium?? True or not? I haven't cuttlefish bone. Anything else I could try?

could you possibly take a photo of the snail? there are some areas where damage isn't too much of a problem - if we could see it we can assess the severity.
For now try not to disturb him too much, moving them can make it worse. If you can't get a cuttlefish (pet shops, wilkos etc should have some) you could try looking onlne or at equestrian centres for limestone flour. Yes eggshells contain calium they're just not very convenient to use, if you can grind the egg shell as finely as possible that can be given to him, it's better than nothing.
also is the bowl ceramic? he could have landed on that which may have further damaged his shell, i would take anything too hard out of his tank (if there's anything hard in there) and replace with softer things (a plastic bowl for instance).

Yeah the mobile version of the board isn't very fancy, but if you can uplod to Photobucket (works with my phone) and then maybe give us a link, that'll be splendid.

I checked Gary this morning and he seemed to have formed a white thin layer over the shell less bit. Is this his shell reforming? I sprayed him aswell and his box, he's still active but hanging around the lid area. Not sure if he's touched food yet.
