Hi Guys I have got 4 juvinile GALS, 2 albino and 2 standard. The 2 standards are fine it seems, but the albinos are retracted quite far into the shells and all they seem to be doing is producing this really thick mucus, normally seems to have poo inside it too. Am I doing something wrong? These are my first GALS and Im pretty worried something is up. They are on cocnut fibre, which they seem to be fine with, I have been feeding them on cucumber and lettuce, with cuttlebone always avalible for them. I have a horrible feeling the albinos have died? Cheers Kain

You will know if they have died by the smell. It's smells like rotten fish. I'm sorry I can't help you any further

They need more variety in the diet, cucumber and lettuce are fine as treats but they need different kinds of vegetables and protein to thrive in the long run. Soaked fish flakes, or dog/cat food (also soaked) are a good option for the protein source. And yes, you will definitely smell it if they're dead, and have no doubts whatsoever. Sometimes highly inbred snails (which some albino lines are) just retract and die young due to bad genes, even though the conditions are okay.

Oh no, the albinos smell like bad sea water..I guess they are dead then The 2 normals seem fine, I had them in luke warm water today giving them a bath so to speak, they seemed to love it. The albinos are still pooing, but there flesh feels very hard to the touch. I guess they have gane. I hope to god it's nothing I have done! As for the food, I have some snail food, that you mix with water, they eat that. I'll try them on some fish food and cat food, but silly question ,does it matter its meat in jelly?

To my surprise woke up juust now to find one of the albino's out and about having a drink. I do think the one is dead, but I have removed it to a hospital tank to make sure.
I think the odd smell is comming from the poo! The smell of the live albino is just well nothing really, but the smell of the poo on the lid reeks!
I'm completely confused now. Ive given them soaked cat munchies, which seems to have gone down a treat, they have totally ignored the lettuce and cucumber!
EDIT Ha! The other one is awake now, how odd!

If the poop smells, clean it out.

Glad your snails are alive, Id def give them more of a varied diet and give them some good baths. Remove all the poo and hopefully the change of diet will help sort out the smell.
