I was told Chinese hams couldn't be kept together at all! Lovely pics Saskia! I love the two cats and all the hamsters!

The stick insects with the stripe on their back are the Sungaya inexpectata, lowland type. Chinese hamsters can only be kept as a group as they are still young, so up to an age between 3 to 6 months. After that we keep them as breeding pairs, that goes well and only very few pairs we have to break up because of fighting (Maybe one or two pairs in a hundred pairs..) This can very if you have an other breeding line of hamsters.. We had some chinese hamsters from UK breeders, but they are a lot more difficult cause most of the females won't accept their males. It has been a long time since we had those, so maybe this has changed in time.
In Januari we will go to the UK again, so maybe we will buy ourselfs some new hamsters and try again..

Ah. I'd love to get a Chinese ham again, they are one of my favourite animals. They're quite rare over here.

Lovely pets! The cat in the second photo is adorable - looks like a lion! All the stick and leaf insects are amazing. And is that a very large mouse you are holding?

Thank you Yes, it's a mouse.. We breed them for shows, and large mice get better points as tiny mice.. (of course there is a difference between large and just fat, they must be normal shaped..)

oh i love Extatosoma tiaratum. Used to keep these guys absolutely lovely. Had some brilliant males too, would let them fly round my college room from time to time (they weren't too good at landing though).
I love their whole biology of having eggs that look like seeds that are then collected and tended by ants, the end bit eaten by ants and the rest stored, then that the hatchlings look like little ants to leave the colony un-noticed. oooo did i mention how much i love these guys?
