Hi! Could you post a pictures where I can see the differance between a fully grown snail's shell and a snail that is still growing. I don't know how does this "lip" look like and I don't know for what to look for . I found just a little information on the Internet. It would be fantastic if the pictures are with fulicas.

I could show you my young and old Cepaea & Arianta who grow a very noticeable lip when mature (just say yes and I'll do it when I'm at my computer instead of my phone), but I think fulica don't really do that. If I've understood it right, their growth just slows down to a stop at a certain age. Or almost a stop - some individuals continue growing (very slowly) till the rest of their lives.

as etana says it's really not obvious in adult GALS. thee is generally a slight thickening and sometimes you get a bit of rougher growth after they're finished. basically if you can't see the very fresh fragile pale yellow growth then they're pretty much done growing (unelss there was an environmental problem or were damaged), this is very obvious of the dark shelled varieties but a little less obvious on the yellow shelled varieties. If you want to know if yours have finished growing you could post a picture of them showing their shell and we could tell you

it's basically the bit where you can see the yellow growth that i needed to see. it varies from snail to snail but generally with GALS at about a year or before (depending how quickly they grow) they stop growing, but it's really dependent on conditions. I'ld say mr. brown certainly has more growing to do. the jadatzi probably will gorw a bit more too certainly hasn't formed a stop line yet, it generally just looks a little less clean and shiny when they stop it's hard to explain

Oh, I have a question about GALS growing! In trick's jadatzi photo, a bit of the mantle is clearly showing over the shell edge. Will they still do that with the mantle when they've finished growing, or is it just characteristic of the growing age?

oooo good question! It's not something i've though about before. *goes and checks* several of my fully grown (and quite old) snails currently have the mantle over the shell edge and several dont (mainly talking margies here). I think it probably just depends on the snail.

I'll back that one Md, most of mine have it showing over there shell but there kinda well fed happy n currently relaxing n generally hanging about. The others don't have it showing and are either asleep like Seilide the tiger snail ( I swear I can hear that snail snoring at nite ,or busy snailing around in the branches or on the sides of the tanks or eating. So I'm kinda thinking as much as its down to the individual snails it can also be down to what activity's there doing. The Margie Bulldozers for instance have just had a big feed n r all hanging out fat n sassy so there's r showing over the edge of the shell. Zorst

Hey, the huge fulica I bought a week ago had a dark, "not clean and shiny" shell edge, different to the shells of my smaller GALS, so I thought she was done growing. However, she has had a calcium obsession since moving in with me, which I've been trying to figure out.
Today I noticed she has grown a millimeter or two of new, brightly coloured shell! Her mantle is dark, so I know I'm not mistaking mantle edge with new shell. How common is it for a snail to stop growing and then start again?

Maybe she was in a bad situation before and didn't want weak uneven growth and now that she's in better care she's growing again?

That would make sense, I think. My Taavetti stopped his shell growth too when he wasn't eating, and now he's started it again.

Perhaps they don't get nutrients to put in there shell

Yeah. I like that neither has had Bad Shell Growth, though. I wonder if stopping fully instead of growing badly is down to individual snails or whether it's environmental.

if the conditions are bad it's very common for a snail to stop growing then start growing again when the conditions improve so you know you're doing well . I would guess that bad growth vs stopping depends on why they're stopping/having bad growth. i.e. any combination of Humidity, lack of good food, lack of calcium, lack of heat. My rescue margie Watson had stopped growing and he was kept in poor conditions without a heatmat and then resumed growing later.
