Hey, My big tree root (which the snails love to climb on, hide behind etc) gets little spots of green mold on it. Except that when I decide it's the day I scrape it off, I find someone else has done it already. Very carefully, too, so there's nothing left for me to do. It's in my GALS tank (Tiger snail, A. fulica rodatzi & A. balteata habitat). I do suppose that snails run into lots of mold growing on wood in the wild, so I kind of think they'd instinctively recognise it (at least when they've taken the test bites that snails do a lot), but that's just my gut feeling. Does anyone know if there's a health hazard in it for the snails? And also, does anyone know if this is typical of any of the particular snail species I mentioned? I kind of think it's my Tiger snail doing it because he has very odd food preferences anyway (rotten food, poop of the other snails, etc - lol, I love having a snail who cleans up the tank) but I've not seen anyone have a go at mold on wood with my own eyes. Thanks!

It's probably actually algae, it is quite common for algae to turn up in the tanks as the conditions are good. virtually all snails LOVE algae. as far as i'm aware you don't get green mould (although some "bigger" fungi fruiting bodies can be green like parrot waxcap) unless in symbiosis with algae - therefore being a lichen which i wouldn't expect to grow that quickly in a tank. Here's some pictures (not mine nor my blog) of snails eating algae off things and leaving radula marks cabinetofcuriosities-greenfingers.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/snail-trail-art.htmlyou can see these all over any place where algae grows on moist surfaces, we have a load all over the lower rooves (and possibly the higher ones i don't see) at work.

Those photos are awesome Thanks, lol, apparently the situation is much better than I expected to hear. I sometimes worry whether I'm giving them enough taste variety when organic, local veg gets harder to find in the winter, and they've had access to yummy stuff without my knowing. Maybe I should get a similar root for my little ones, too.
