Hi all! Just wondering if anyone could share how they keep their slugs? I've only had two slugs before, and even though they both had lots of food and space, one killed (and ate) the other. Do they need any care different from snails?

I don't keep slugs yet but I'm also bumping this up for you. I've read that care is largely the same as with snails, except slugs need less calcium - but still a source should be available in case they want it. Also maybe you had carnivorous slugs before?

Never thought of that etana! That's probably what happened Does anyone know if leopard slugs are carnivores?

Does anyone know if leopard slugs are carnivores? They aren't carnivores but omnivores, they will eat carrion and other slugs, and have a tendency to cannibalism.

I was always told you need to feed them some protein IE meat regularly to stop the Cannibalism.
If you want any other types or different genetics let me know as I have to catch them from the kitchen n put them back outside every nite. The joys of renovating a 200 yr old farm house lol. As there from outside n were in the same country I can post them in this temp.

I keep about 5 species of slugs, they have the same care as snails except my leopard slugs as they will eat each other as soon as they get the chance so they have to be fed protein more regularly than others, I do this by feeding them wet fish flakes and sweet potato, I started off with 7 adults and was left with 2 but they successfully bred and had babies and out of 30-40 babies only 15 managed to not eat each other x

Also they will cannibalize if they feel they don't have enough room x

! Yeah n they still get the bath if they have mites on em. Thankfully the numbers have lessened a bit as some work got completed but I still get quite a few appearing especially if its been raining. They come in the holes in the stone work that hasn't bean re-pointed yet and around the eaves where were sorting out the roof. Its a long ongoing job as it has to be done when funds allow. But fresh laid slug eggs on the dish cloth :oI do draw the line at sorry. I now have to keep the washing up stuff and all the plates etc in the main living room where the slugs don't go. Ahh it'll get sorted out eventually, its a real good job I like snails and wont hurt the cousins the slugs lol. Even the veg box's now have to have clip on lids to keep the veg safe lol. If only I could persuade the cat to eat everything up each evening instead of going back for snacks all night or to let me put its food bowl elsewhere. The joys of renovation work , it'll be worth it in the end. Zorst

Thanks everyone for the info Thanks for the offer Zorst but I have the same problem with slugs as you do, they always come into the porch to eat the dog/cat food :/ I have plenty of selection, just trying to find out which ones would be best

Zorst I also have slugs in my kitchen (in four different houses i lived in)!! haha they are looking for the cat food in the kitchen. They have made secret, very irremovable, slime paths behind the washing machine and refrigerator. those paths lead them to the foodsources everyday. they help them to find the foodsource back again. and when they are in danger they could easely escape via the paths. They just seems to disappear. I had to trough the catfood away after the slugs were in it, my cats wouldn;t eat it anymore because of the thick slime they left on it. It took years before i discovered their paths and were they came from everyday. I was looking for the slime tracks, to find out were they came from but the tracks seems to disappear suddenly. But now i know: they aren't, they are hide very well. Since i know about the slime paths i dont remove them, but i have made a special feeding dish for the slugs, on the end of their paths. I replaced the catfood and problem is solved. I actually like them in my kitchen. they are so beatifull, long leopart slugs (aprx 15 cm long) in the beginning they were very scared when i came near or put on the light in the kitchen. they immediately freezed or fled. But now they seems to know they are save. If i come near, they keep eating and aren;t scared at all. As long as its one or two and not many more its fine by me. If they have mites i give them a shower, but they really don't like that! Last time i did, he went away and didn;t returned for almost a week! So... maybe a friendly method to get rid of slugs, if you want? haha

Aww Selena, that's funny! It's like you're running a little restaurant for slugs I moved house recently and my plants had to temporarily go into an outdoor building. When I brought them back in, there were little slime trails over all of them, but I couldn't find any slugs on them. After a few days, one of my fittonia plants was getting a bit wilty and unhappy and losing some of its leaves, so I gave it a good misting with water and put it into a clear plastic bag to raise the humidity for it. The following night, I came into the bathroom where the plant was and put the light on and there were three little slugs happily munching away on my plant! They must have thought they were in slug heaven with the plant getting a spraying and a plastic bag over it to keep the humidity high! Sneaky little things XD They swiftly were sent to live outside, far away from my houseplants

YAY!!!!! At least I'm not the only one crazy enough to bath n feed the wild slugs in my Kitchen . Its nice to know I'm not alone in the world. I have to say I kinda like the visiting slugs but at the moment its to cold and they aren't showing themselves. They are used to me being around them as I don't ever harm them, but they are so hard to catch if on there slime trails out as these all head through holes in the stone work, and the walls are 4ft thick. Thanks all for respons on my story :-) Etana, no its not haha, i have to change that. it was a little slug from the garden but he escaped and now i have some new ones. The kitchen slug is a limax maximus and eat other slugs and snails. before i discoverd that i tried to keep one in captivity with other snails. It was a very active, happy confident and funny slug but he feld the need to sit constantly on other snails and cover them in a thick, gelly and sticky mucus casing when he gets irritatet by a little movement of the snail behind him. Once, he almost killed one little snails by his slime cover, he couldn't get out of it or move for a day. some snails disappeared and since i know he could eat other snails, i know why they suddenly were gone.
