Hello! I've been thinking recently about vacation and what to do with my snails (Cepaea hortensis) at the time I'm away. Could I just not give them food and water and make them hibernate? Should I put them into the fridge? Neither of these options sounds like a good idea, but you know... Could you please tell me what you do with your snails?
Thanks in advance

How long will you be away for? Cepaea are pretty hardy little guys and would be fine with some longer-lasting food (seeds, nuts, some growing lettuce etc.) for up to 2 weeks, in my opinion.

Well, I won't be away longer than 2 weeks for sure. I'll probably give them some tortoise food, but what about moisture? Isn't that going to be a problem? Thanks for quick answer, btw.

Give the tank a thorough spray before you leave, and put some shallow dishes of water in it. You could add some wet sphagnum moss too to keep humidity up. Remember though that Cepaea are used to dry periods in the wild, so they shouldn't have too much trouble with a short period without tank sprayings!

Would I have to do the same? I am going on holiday for a week (in a few weeks time) and I keep Fulicas (normal and jadatzi), Retic and a Tiger.

I haven't left my snails for vacations ever but I wonder if there will be ventilation issue in these 2 whole weeks? Because even there're holes on the tank the plants do respire so as the snails will this result in lack of oxygen...that's my concern...

Live plants actually release oxygen when they use carbon dioxide in photosynthesis.

I would definitely put in extra bath tubs for them, and food that lasts long. The best thing would be if someone could check on your snails when you're away and add water and food if everything's gone, but if that's not possible, well, luckily big snails too can aestivate if they get too dry.

I've left mine for a week before now and they have been ok,I just used food that lasts a long time and make sure they have extra water baths to help with humidity etc especially in tanks with a heat mat.
But as I have livestock here and other pets when we all go away next yr were having someone come to look after all the animals so the snails will be fed n misted at least every other day.

I'm going on holiday (again) for a week on Saturday. What foods should I leave for my snails? Probably something that won't rot quickly.

I'm going on holiday (again) for a week on Saturday. What foods should I leave for my snails? A big chunk of sweet potato, and carrots. They rot slowly, don't smell too bad when rotting, and they're nutritious.
