Hello friends. I am a chinese snailholic and I wrote articles in Chinese to appeal more people in my country to have interests in snails. This is one of them translated in English.
Collecting&classifying snail for years, I know chinese snails well and always I want to know snails from other lands.
nothing to do with scallion: 'scallion' snail
The pictures below may confuse many people. Belonging to one genus, these snails have various bands. It is difficult to figure them out, even for indigenous people.
In this article ,we will talk about two different species in this genus.
Cepaea snails have a long history in Europe. And to classify them is not easy.
Translated in Chinese, they are named as scallion snail. It is funny when scallion is widely used in chinese cuisine, and this snails actually have nothing to do with scallion.
Jokingly, Netizens often ask me “neng hao zen”.(a chinese internet slang, short for: Are they edible? Are they delicious? How to eat them?)
The Chinese name of Cepaea hortensis (O. F. Müller, 1774) is Garden Scallion snail. The next is Cepaea nemoralis(Linnaeus ,1758) ,it has very different names in Chinese. Shell traders call it more-bands snail. And Hongkong pet traders call it exactly as its pronunciation . They trader often claimed that Cepaea nemoralis are precious protected species. And then ask for a high perice(take care!). Now there are more and more scallion snails in China. And I think it’s better to call them bush scallion snail .As they are named grove snail in English .
According to early documents ,Cepaea hortensis (O. F. Müller, 1774) mainly lives in western and mitteleuropa .Recently ,I found it in Taiwan from visitors’ photos .
In China ,it may be worse because this years Cepaea snails are nearly everywhere. I do concern about biological invasion. And a guy even told me that white Achatina Fulica is not Invasive species. There is also a large group of onlookers claiming they are so cute and adorable, seemingly do not care about biological invasion crisis at all.
Well, what is the difference between this two too cute snails? We can get answers from local language. One is called grown-lipped snail ,another is white-lipped snail .Funnily, the lip is very interesting .

I have written various articles on snails for chinese amateurs and potential amateurs. here is the website link:http://t.cn/R7Ofu56 It‘s a pity that they are all written in Chinese. In the furture I would translate more articles and send them here. I would be very happy if anyone would like to contact with me. I can introduce many species which live in mainland China. I am also fascinated with non-Chineses snails, and i am eager to know them. here is my e-mail address:starsareintherose@163.com

That is funny about the scallion snails, The Chinese are so ingenious about naming an invasive specie epicurean delicious!😆 Well you wont have any invasion since they will be heading to a restaurant for a quick stir fry in the wok and the scalper prices at pet stores will drop when they reproduce en mass no longer rare like the mystery snails/apple snails in the Phillipine.
I am glad you can bypass the Chinese censor and share us about chinese snails! Thank you keep them coming!🤗🙏🏾
