It shouldn't cause a problem, as a lot of species (i.e. ones in florida) live around sandy soil and they seem not to be affected negatively. There should still be some soil present along with the sand though.

It depends. What species are you planning on keeping on sand? What is in backyard sand (does it have grit in it like sharp sand for example)? you may have moisture problems, you will probably lose the outer shell layer (so the snail will go white at a younger age). Unless it's a species which is found on sand i would say no.
