I got my first two snails 9 days ago. They are achatina reticulata, about 8 months and both of them were carrying eggs already. The first 4 days I took them out at least once a day and tried to feed them since they weren't eating in the tank, they also got a bath which they absolutely loved. After two days I got them to eat a small amount of banana and some of their cuttlefish. One of the snails ate a small amount of a thin slice of cucumber as well in the first days (this was inside the tank). Outside of the tank they are very active, but inside the tank they have mostly been sitting in one of the corners sleeping.
I was told they might be acting weird because of stress (moving to a new place and me handling them every day) or maybe because they have eggs, so I stopped taking them out every day but have moved them inside the tank 2-3 times and put them on their food. They're not eating at all and they mostly just move around right after I've sprayed them with water or moved them. I've tried cucumber, different lettuces, sweet pepper, carrots, blueberries, banana, tomato - even cutting it up different ways and sprinkling it with cuttlefish (this was how I finally got them to try the banana). I guess I'm mostly worried about them not eating cuttlefish. The person who rehomed the snails gave me a big piece at about 15cm long and said that the snails would go through that very quickly, and they've just made small (I think) holes in it. One of the snails has a pretty bad dent in his shell and a small crack, and he's the one who has been eating most of the cuttlefish, but 80% of what he has eaten of it has been outside the tank.
I think their environment is alright. I have a digital thermo-/hygrometer which tells me that they have 20-23 degrees (c) and 80-99% humidity. Even though the humidity is high the substrate looks pretty dry at the top so I spray a little there and also on the snails even at 99%, is this wrong? They haven't dropped their eggs yet so I'm worried they hate their vivarium.
I use coconut fiber (I think it's called, English isn't my native language) and they also have a piece of wood to climb on, a plant and sphagnum moss. The tank is very small, just 40x30x30 but I'm going to get them a new tank at 80x40x40 probably today.
My questions:
Could stress or eggs cause the snails to behave like this?
Should I keep handling them since that's the only times they've eaten or should I leave them be?
How fast should two healthy, happy snails go through a big (15cm) cuttle piece?
They are about 10cm in shell length, does this sound small for a retic of 8 months?
I'm already so fond of them and I constantly worry they don't like me as their snail parent, I just want them to be happy and healthy.
