I know no one who has ever thought about keeping any unusual pets. So snail keepers are a miracle!
I went to Florida (and got painfully introduced to fire ants several times) and saw some huge snail shells under a tree near Everglades National Park. They were beautiful and the biggest one was a handful. I looked around and there were some glued to the tree trunk. I pried one off and it was alive. Amazing. I pried off four of them and brought them home with me. Along the way I asked at several places what they were and eventually I found out they are Orthalicus floridensis. At the moment they are living in a small plastic container and i tried feeding them banana (they weren't really interested, but they did poop something out so maybe they ate some).
Then I found a recipe for tree snail smoothie on here and made some, except I confused it and a video up and mistook a papaya for a mango and added yeast, but no dog biscuits, but with oatmeal and parsley but no lettuce, and maybe something else. The blender unscrews itself at the bottom as it turns so I ended up making quite a mess, but I made some anyway. I put it on a lid and dried it a bit and put it on, but they don't seem interested at all and won't even crawl over it. I am working on a better cage but since I am new to this I am hesitant.
Above all else I don't want the snails to die from my stupidity!
I put the smoothie in the fridge overnight and it really fermented a lot. Now I'm not sure if that is good or bad. I forgot to add sweet potato at first so I cooked one and ground that into the smoothie in the blender (more mess!) and put some of that on another lid to dry out completely before putting it on their container.
They have stopped pooping so I guess they aren't eating. They seem subdued. I put a wet (bottled water) folded paper towel in there for them to crawl on if they want and that seemed to perk them up a little.
Their container is a clear food container with smoothie on the lid and a wet paper towel on the bottom, and four snails about as long as your little finger, almost.
SO, OH GREAT SNAIL EXPERT GURUS
Tell me what you think I need to know right away to help my snails. I want 100% live snails and will feel horrible if any die.
