Hello, I have one specific snail which always seeks out another specific snail and continually piggybacks on this other snail’s shell. The other snail seems to slide around hoping to get him off his back but the hijacker hangs on happily looking around! If I separate them, he looks for him and jumps back aboard! Why does he do this and should I keep separating them? Sometimes he is completely hanging off of him upside down and it looks very heavy and uncomfortable. They do not appear to be mating. They don’t interact face to face. Thanks for any comments!!

Cepaea nemoralis? This sounds like normal behaviour to me. Some snails just have nothing better to do with themselves, other than to annoy others and constantly try to get a free ride!

Thank you for your reply. Yes, cepaea nemoralis... So, I should not bother to separate them then... I guess I felt a liitle sorry for the other one carrying the weight! Thank you!!

My snails seem to do this too... I'm very confused by this. I once had a giant clump of them piggybacking eachother..

I don't think it's a problem. Mine do that sometimes, especially after I rearrange the terrarium. Maybe they're just excited, haha.

My snails do that all of the time! I call it “clumping”

My snails ALWAYS do it in baths because they hate standing in water. Sometimes, they even try to climb on their own shells! Also, they sometimes do it to have more showers.
