Hey everyone!
Here in Canada it is finally starting to looks like spring. The snails have started to come out where I am, with most of the species I've seen so far being smaller microsnails
like quick gloss snails. With summer hopefully coming soon, I'm excited to look for some larger snail species. My plans so far are to collect a few terrestrial and aquatic specimens. Here are a few of the species I'll be looking for:
- Whitelip Neohelix albolabris (I have one of these snails and want to give it some company of its own species)
- Flamed Tigersnail Anguispira alternata (I have one of these snails whose mate unfortunately died a while ago, I'll be looking for a friend for it)
- Heath snail Xerolenta obvia (These are not a native species however I have been told about an isolated population a few hours from where I live, hopefully I can check it out. I will take at most two snails from such a population if I collect any at all, and will not release them )
- Milk snail Otala lactea (I have been told I may be able to find some of these snails being sold at some fish markets, I'll be keeping an eye out)
- Grove snail Cepaea nemoralis (I will be looking for interesting morphs of grove snails, mostly unbanded or dark individuals)
As mentioned, I will also be looking for a number of aquatic species that I will ID as I find them. My ID skills of aquatic snails need some work. I have a suspicion that one of my local rivers has some invasive mystery snails or something of the like living in it, and so I'm interested to do some sampling there!
Does anyone else have snail plans this summer?
Happy snailing!
