Hello friends, I made a post similar to this one on the “General Discussion” page and I didn’t get a reply, so I decided to leave a message here as well. So, my two helix aspersa snails decided to start...reproduction today. And the smaller one’s mantle is swollen...is this normal? I’m not sure when they started but from what I can tell they’ve been doing it for an hour. How long does it usually take for them to stop? And is there anything I need to do for them to help?

It can take hours before they 'stop', swollen mantle is normal. If there come eggs, this can be from between a few days to weeks, they can keep their eggs a long time if they don't find the circumstances good. Make sure you have enough earth ) coir in the enclosure and keep it moist (sprayed). Once the eggs are laid, it takes between 1 to 4 weeks before they hatch. Do be aware you can end up with over 100 eggs and thus babies with each batch. If you can't handle this (100 grown Cornu aspersum are a LOT - I takk from experience), you can dig up the eggs while they are just laid and still white and put them in the freezer for a few days. Or you can put them outside in the garden if they are native.

Adding to blackscorpion's fabulous post, lots of baby snails die of natural causes after hatching, and not all eggs hatch. So from a clutch of 100 eggs you might end up with ~30 snails reaching adult age, maybe even less.

I hear that often, but my 101 hatched babies (1 clutch) all survived and grew at an enormous rate. I counted them several times, from birth until release. I released them in the wild when they were as big as their parents. Meaning they were with me for 4 months and all survived those 4 months...

Odd to me, but I'm going to voluntarily hatch a clutch now and see if I can get them all to adulthood! You've inspired me, lol
