What's up fellow Snailers?
It has been quite a while since I've been active on this forum; my last semester at school was brutal and I had very little time to do anything but study. This semester I am taking 4 courses, as opposed to the seven I took last semester , and I will have a lot more time to focus on my favourite hobbies. Right now, where I am in Canada is incredibly cold with about a metre of snow on the ground. Even though I have been avoiding any excursion outside recently, it gives me lots of time to plan for warmer weather. I plan to venture a bit further than my normal exploring range to find new species of reptiles and amphibians (I am an avid herper, hmu if you're also into herping!) and of course snails. I love planning excursions and working out what equipment I'll need for collecting, observing, and recording all the cool things I find.
I am also in the process of improving my enclosures for the pets I keep right now. I thought I'd take this opportunity to do an update on what I am keeping at the moment! Starting with the snails:
Cepaea nemoralis: Currently I've got 12 mature adults and about 22 juveniles from 2018's clutches. The adults are in an approx. 15 gallon tank and the juveniles are in a medium-sized lettuce container. I have a an awesome range of morphs right now and am super stoked to see what kind of combinations they can produce! Right now they're just chilling though; most are pretty slow with the cooler temperatures. The adults' names are: Gray, Corn1, Hobiecat, Willowcat, Hepcat, Duckcat, Tomato, Starfish, Buddha, Lemma, Phlox, and Shark.
Succinea putris: I have one large common amber snail named Birch. It has been in the same enclosure since I collected it, and seems to be doing well. I may move it to a larger enclosure though, it is in one of those Ferrero Rocher rectangular containers. At about 1 inch in shell length it is much bigger than the wild amber snails I've seen.
Aguispira alternata: Woods, my flamed tigersnail is doing very well, and so is it's container! There is a very nice plant growing on one side of the jar. It is housed in a large peanut butter jar, around 1L. I am hoping to find a friend for Woods this summer.
Pomacea bridgesii (?): I am down to five golden apple snails after a tank change and several water changes. They are not as hardy as I had thought, but are doing much better with a tank heater. They are in an 8 gallon cylindrical tank with gravel and fake plants. They absolutely annihilated the real plants I had put in there, so for now its fake plants for this tank. These guys don't have names.
So, on to the non-snail pets. I will most likely have more of these in the warmer months as well haha
- Giant American millipede and skirted isopods: I have one large millipede, Fili, and a few skirted isopods in a medium-sized lettuce container full of leaf litter, bark, and decaying wood. Hoping to upgrade this container when the warmer weather comes back.
And finally, my newest addition that I am super excited to have...
- Crested gecko: Back in December I purchased a ~1 year old male crested gecko. I called him Zinger and am just so happy to have him. This is my first time keeping a reptile as a permanent pet, and so I am making sure to continue to learn as much as I can about keeping him comfortable and healthy. He is very calm and accustomed to handling, but even so I like to give him his space and not bug him all the time, as much as I'd like to. I have him in a 20 gallon long enclosure, and will upgrade him to a vertical tank when I find one, so he has more space to climb. For now he seems to like his tank furnished with lots of silk and plastic plants, a felt bottom to conserve moisture, and lots of antlers to climb on. I was concerned about wood developing mold since his tank stays pretty humid, so the antlers seem like a good solution!
Anyway, those are my creatures! Feel free to ask me about any of these guys and to tell me what you are keeping right now! Have a good one everybody
