I just now noticed one of my adult size Helix a floating face down in the water dish. I quickly scooped him out, but it's too late. Waterlogged and clearly dead. He must have fallen from the underside of the lid directly into the water. It couldn't have happened more than an hour ago, for he looks freshly gone. The water is only about an inch deep. Why couldn't he crawl out?? I feel so bad. This was a young adult, 8 months old, healthy and active.

Was the snail's pneumostome in the water? If so that could be the reason. Snails can die just from excess water entering their bodies but that way it could've just crawled out. Personally I don't use water bowls as I'm afraid of drowning my own snails, instead I spray their food with a spray bottle and they lick the water along with the food.

Iβm sorry about your snail, but I donβt use water bowls also for the pure reason of me worrying about them drowning. Spray the tank to help it keep moist and humid and that should do the job!

I'm sorry for your snail I used to use water bowls but I removed them when I was told little snails can drown in the water (it made sense, newborn snails are super tiny) But I didn't know an adult snail could drown too

Thatβs so sad Iβm so so sorry Iβm shocked since my Helix love their pool and hang out in their all day, never had any issues, even with tiny babies. But now Iβm going to watch it extra carefully. They never have more than a few cm of water though

Sorry to hear it. He probably had an unfortunate (not shell first) landing and hit himself, and due to that couldn't function. Baby snails will be in danger of drowning if they start floating when they as much as walk onto the water dish, but as far as I have seen, adults are pretty careful when it comes to bathing.

Only a shallow plate of water from now on. They are savvy aroind the bowls of pond snails, dipping their head under and gulping down water, hanging on by the tip of the muscular "tail". And carefully circumnavigating the rim.
