Hello!
I just got 6 Helix Aspersum snails in the mail today! They were very active, they crawled around and ate some lettuce. Now, they are all sleeping I guess as they haven't moved in an hour or two. Is that normal? I'm probably just overly nervous because I've never had snails before and I don't know what their normal behavioral patterns are. When should I be nervous/know something is wrong?

Healthy snails will spend a lot of time not active. Are they in their shells or out of their shells? If they're standing still out of their shells, they're just resting/sleeping and they're probably happy with their enclosure. If theyre inside their shells, that probably means that they're stressed out/scared, and don't like their environment.

I'm probably just overly nervous because I've never had snails before and I don't know what their normal behavioral patterns are. When should I be nervous/know something is wrong? Snails are inactive a lot of the time, this is normal behaviour. Don't expect them to be an "exciting" pet that's constantly on the go. They usually sleep during the day and will become more active at dusk and during the night, but depending on the species they may not be active and awake every day. Helix aspersa / Cornu aspersum tend to be a more lively species, but don't be surprised if they rest for a while as this is common when they first move to a new tank setup. It's also perfectly normal for snails to "sleep" inside their shells, particularly if they are on a wall or ceiling. It's only a concern if they retract deeply inside their shells which can indicate a problem. Otherwise you should expect to see them with their bodies tucked inside their shells rather than stretched out when resting.

When I got my aspersums through the mail, they crawled into their flower pot hidey, and I didn't see them for the rest of that day. In fact, the day after cleaning out their tank fully (taking them out and then putting them back in) they go into hiding. I think it's a stress or exhaustion thing, nothing to worry about. As to what to expect when they're settled, they sleep a LOT, plus they're nocturnal. Mine tend to be starting to get active about the time I go to bed, and then they're sleeping by the time I change their food first thing in the morning. Not that I never see them awake between those times, but they're not active and always bouncing around or anything Good luck, new snail owner!
