How can you tell when a snail is dead or hibernating? I've got one who is in his shell, but he doesn't smell or anything. He also doesn't have a mucus cover to protect him, which is why I'm worried. How can you tell when cornu aspersum are hibernating versus dead? at what temperature do they hibernate? My tank is currently 70 degrees, is that too cold?
Thanks guys I really appreciate all your help!

Hibernating and aestivating snails will seal themselves inside the shell with a papery/solid covering over the entire shell entrance (called an epiphragm). Sounds like your snail is just sleeping/resting. At this time of year it's normal for them to be less active. If you want to check on him, try putting him in a shallow dish of warm water and then onto some of his favourite food when he emerges.
