Wow!!!! These are beautiful! I wish I could get them over here. They would be wonderful. They are all so different. It's pretty amazing. I wonder if all the offspring from a given one comes out the same or if the color and markings are that variable in a clutch of eggs. That would be way cool. Has anyone hatched them out or are all of these wild ones?

that's a good question (try asking Paul, he's very helpful). The pictures I posted are of a wild one. They're common here but I adore them all the same

All mine are wild, but one of them (the one in my avatar) had a white barb in its side, so I think it had just mated. I put it back outside after this but when I came to collect some for my tank I got one that looks the same and was near to where I put it back in my garden, so I'm hoping its the same one. ;D
No eggs have been found yet though...

Do you take them from the wild and keep them?

Yep, they don't seem to mind!
Anyway, I have enough in my garden to spare a few ;D

They are! They all like to sleep on the roof of the tank. I suspect this is because they couldn't do this in the wild... as there are no tank lids...

i think its cepaea hortensis. its similar to c. nemoralis, but the shell is more circle shaped, and they have a white lip to their shell. they are also smaller than c.n.
c. hortensis usually come in yellow and yellow striped (sometimes the stripes merge together)
c. nemoralis come in many many colours.
kind regards
mike

I didn't think you could tell the difference between brown and white lipped snails until the lip actually formed?
I'm pretty sure they're all brown lipped in my garden

Going back to Marysnail's question about breeding, I swear I have seen an article about shell polymorphism and genetics for Cepaea on Arno's site. Arno?

Dude you gonna have to use easyier language, If it's got more than 4 letters in it I don't know what it means ok. lol. I'll get to my point shall I? What's Polymorphism?

This is like trying to explain the word between without using it!!!
"Polymorphism: Difference in DNA sequence among individuals. Genetic variations occurring in more than 1% of a population would be considered useful polymorphisms for genetic linkage analysis. Compare mutation."
"A trait of an organism that is found in more than one state in a population. Also used for the existence of different forms of a gene in a population. For example, one well known polymorphism of color vision is the existence of both red-green dichromats and normal trichromats in the human population."

that's the one Arno but the link on your Library page doesn't work for me. I get:
"<response type="error" value="Media request timed-out. Token: 5G048NRGQQ2WPDRKNRAR"/>"
although the link you provided here works fine.

I said earlier in this tread that C.Nemoralis buried themselves like GALS, they've stopped doing this since I added the branches to their tank. They now sleep on the sides/roof of the tank or on the underside of the branches and haven't buried since.
Maybe this means they like it better?
The Helix Aspersa haven't changed what they do except the bigger ones have stopped totally retracting themselves into their shells when sleeping. But I'm thinking this is because they've got full stomachs and can no longer fit in there, the bloaters... ;D

These are pictures of my two blonde C.Nemoralis: You can see the contrast in the colour of their bodies to the one in my avatar, which is very dark. And it's just started chucking it down here so there'll be loads more snails to look at ;D ;D P.S. Does anyone mind me posting the full pictures here? I did this because the thumbnails I've used before are very poor quailty and I don't want people to have to click on them just to see them properly. On the other hand, they are big and the page takes longer to load. So comments please.
