Dear Thuja, there has been a similar thread in this forum: " Cornu what?". As a result we know now that - Helix aspersa is outdated and as a consquence there are two opinions on how the snail should be called:
- Cornu aspersum according to Falkner (1997) or
- Cantareus aspersus, according to Giusti (1995).
So the maxima snail should be called either Cornu aspersum maximum or Cantareus aspersus maximus. In my opinion "maxima" is only a name added to describe a special attribute of this snail race, but maxima is still only Cornu aspersum. Concerning nobody offering Cornu aspersum, but always Helix aspersa: That is written in most of the snail raisers' books (albeit scientifically incorrect). But you may also find Helix pisana (correctly Theba pisana) or Helix vermiculata (correctly Eobania vermiculata). Snail raisers' books are written by agricultural engineers, in other words by farmers, who care less about what an animal is called scientifically (by the biologists, that is) than in what gain it may yield. Only following those who do not care about correct scientific naming would mean not to be able to take part in any discussion on systematic questions, concerning relationships between species or larger groups of animals, a major part of today's biology. Regards Robert
