Hi there, thanks a lot for all the comfort you gave me! The book will be called "Einheimische Landschnecken im Terrarium" (Domestic terrestrial snails in the terrarium), but it will only be published in German. Here is my project page: www.weichtiere.at/projekte/buchprojekt.htmlThere is also a table of contents, as planned. Of course, it will remain with the editor to decide, what will actually be printed. So far as I have hears, what I wrote is about OK and shall be printed. Kind regards Robert As you see I continue working with snails, but it does remind me of her...

*reads through the topic* Wow so many sick people. Me too! Got Crohn's for 20 years now. That was also the reason I was in the hospital over a week ago. Bugger took me down pretty good this summer, and I was operated in August. Spent 5 months hospitalised in total, and I'm still recovering with the occasional trip to the hospital. I wonder if there's a "connection" between snails and people prone to illness... Sound of a Wild Snail Eating got me thinking that, since I could really relate to the author. When you're ill your life moves at snail's pace so they are the perfect companion. Patient, not demanding a lot and always there. Anyway, other than what I posted in my intro post... I like animals, all of them. I involve myself with all sort of animal protection activities, as well as environmentalism. I used to be a vegan, and still am a vegan advocate. Unfortunately, the latest surgery made me unable to sustain myself on plant-based diet alone, so I had to start eating some animal products again. Plant material is tough to digest when you don't quite literally have the guts to do it. Such a shame, because I much prefer veggie food taste-wise, as well as for other reasons. At least I can still enjoy my favourite tempeh and tofu dishes. I'm a bit of a foodie, too, love cooking and spending too much time preparing several course dinners for friends. I'm a gamer, mostly playing RPGs and some strategy games. The Old Republic, Skyrim and DoWII: Retribution currently in rotation. I'm also an aspiring artist, using the digital media as well as pencils as my tools. I'm not very good yet, though. By profession, I'm a trained makeup artist, but I'm reschooling myself to become a clinical dietician eventually. And as I said in my intro topic, I'm an expat living in the lovely city of Amsterdam. I love it here, since everything is within biking/walking distance, the beer is great and the people nice. Despite being a big city, there's nature and lots of wildlife within biking distance, too. Finland, where I come from, has lots of nature, too, but I hate the long distances. You need to choose nature or city life in Finland, pretty much. A more compact country (with milder winters) is more of my thing, hehe. I'd love to have more animals in the house, but the BF isn't so keen on having lots of dependable creatures around. So, for now I'm sticking to snails and getting my fur-fix from other peoples' cats and dogs. Need moar snails, though...

Crohn's is quite a challenge to live with, that's for sure. I have a couple of acquaintances with it, and it's not easy. Amsterdam sounds like a nice place to live. May you succeed in getting moar snails! ;D

Hi pinkunicorn,
Chrohn's is such a terrible illness, a friend of mine suffers from it and has had one botched surgery and now needs another. He is really down on himself due to the fact his life and lifestyle have changed so much from the time the chrohn's started. My cousin and I have tried to help him out but he is feeling quite useless and bad about himself when he should'nt be he is a great person he feels his children will look down on him because he is not the person he use to be. Hope your doing well. Good to meet you. Vallery

OK, what can I tell you about myself that I haven't already?
Well, I'm an artist / photographer. I was home educated up to the age of 16, as were my brother and sister. I always wanted to do something artistic like my mother, who is a florist, but had no idea how hard it is to find creative work. I ended up being shunted from one dead-end job to another until the last workplace "let me go" at the end of my three month probationary period with only the words "you're useless!" as any form of explanation. Employers have every legal right to do that if you are naive enough to sign up for a probationary period - the employee hasn't a leg to stand on. I cried all the way home and wondered what to do next - who would take someone who lost their last job because they were useless, after all?
Well, I'm now volunteering in a busy team, working for charity. I've just completed both a business admin course and a CLAIT (basic to intermediate computing) course and enroled on an ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence - a more advanced computing course aimed at people who will be using computers in the workplace). The office manager thinks I'm far from useless and has really picked me back up, along with her lovely team. I'll be almost sorry to get a job now!
Like so many people, my health is also an issue. I have not had anything diagnosed, but I have almost constant nagging pain near my right hip and my abdomen swells on my right-hand side on occasion. The pain worsens if I carry anything too heavy or bend, so shop work (what I've done the whole time I've been working) is out of the question now. I find it frustrating that I haven't been able to have the problem diagnosed and get angry at times as a result. My snails help me a great deal, as does my love for creativity.
I recently made a simple comic strip and hope to do more, I still love photography and I'll turn my hand to pretty much anything that needs some imagination. I also love music, though I'm no singer and can't play an instrument. I like Electric Light Orchestra and The Feeling best, though I prefer pretty much anything that's easy to listen to and soothing. On saying that, I also like more lively / manic groups like Madness and will happily listen to The Who when I'm in the mood. I suppose it all depends on what I need at the time.
I did say my sister and I will share this account, but she isn't here to put in her 2p worth and it isn't fair to talk for her.
This is Ems signing off.

So many interesting profiles, and for some reason this thread passed me by.... Interesting to see people's backgrounds and hobbies, and sorry to hear of health and other problems with many of us here. One things for sure, looking after our pets help us all through our tough times it seems! PennyFarthing please feel free to share pictures of your art . Sounds like your ex-boss had a vindictive streak. I had a boss like that once, sadistic piece of work. Fortunately I work with lovely people now and we all appreciate each other, but I remember very well the lack of self esteem brought about by this boss, so I can sympathise. Hope your new job opens more doors for you and you never experience being put-down like that again A little about me: I'm happily married and we have two teenaged boys, one of whom has a real aptitude for science and maths, and wants to become a scientist, the other wants to go into engineering, robotics or conservation. They both love nature. I work at a pre-school and enjoy it, used to work at a desk and hated it... Basically I grew up wanting to be a naturalist, or an artist, then maybe a nursery-nurse, or perhaps a vet, or take physics at University.... but hated school and needed to be out of the school environment for the sake of my sanity (seriously) so decided to do secretarial work until I could face going back to an educational setting. And there I stayed in a little rut (as so many of us do) until I left to have my family. Anyway, I like my job now. Perhaps one day I'll go back to studying, I'd like to take a science Pets: I have several species of snails, some Giant African Millipedes, a few slugs (not yet identified but I think they're a Limax species), two lovely corn snakes, a gorgeous mink-coloured Syrian hamster, and goldfish. I like (in no particular order): * art, both in creation and appreciating other peoples work * Music - mainly heavy-metal but also goth (older), classical, some music that I just can't classify such as Corvus Corax (not a well-known band but truely talented), folk, folk-metal and the occasional song from other genres, indie, pop, 80's disco etc. If I like it, I like it - though I'm mainly heavy-metal, goth and folk-metal I like some of Madness, Bony-M (remember them anyone - ra-ra Rasputin etc?), Abba... etc... * Science - fact and fiction. * Nature * Walking * Taekwondo (I'm a blackbelt) * Fantasy novels, such as The Magician series, DragonLance books, Pratchett, but I very rarely have time to read. * Would love to go on a bushcraft survival course * Currently learning to scuba dive and would like to take part in some Sea conservation or research one day (you cn volunteer if you raise enough money to do so ), but for the nearer future am looking forward to exploring our oceans. * Dragons and fantasy ornaments. * Home-made curry * Comedy - quite varied but includes Red Dwarf, Monty Python, The Goodies, The Two Ronnies - some of the older stuff.... I'm out of touch with alot of the newer stuff! * MythBusters Dislikes: * All the heavy-heavy wrong-with-humanity-and-planet things such as war, pollution, cruelty, violence etc etc... More trivial dislikes:.... * Crowds * Cities * Chocolate, sweets/candy, cakes, jelly, anything sweet (since I was a toddler - I simply went off sweet stuff at the age of 3). Just the taste - yuck, but I've nothing against my family eating the stuff. Oh and strong minty toothpaste - blugh! * Citrus fruits * Perfume and scented cleaning products, air freshners... Sorry, I'm just sensitive to certain smells.

Ness, if you hate sweet stuff, do you love pickles and olives? I have a friend like that. Me, I like most sweet things in moderation and go mad for pickled gherkins and olives. On saying that, I could easily make myself sick if someone were to give me posh Continental chocolates, like Lindt. Hope your new job opens more doors for you and you never experience being put-down like that again I'd be happy to share some of my art, but I don't have much saved on my computer at the moment. Yes, that boss was a bit mean at times, though the one that caused me to leave the job before was even worse, so I was probably an easy target due to his constant vindictiveness. If the manager before that one hadn't been so nice, I'd probably have tarred all shop managers (or at least the ones in the big chains, like Tesco, TKMaxx, Wilkinson, etc.) with the same brush. You're right about our pets helping us through, they do. I really hope that snails are completely deaf, because I sometimes use poor Penny as an unpaid, untrained psychiatrist!

Ah no, my taste in food is very savoury, though not too salty. Not keen on sour, though much better than sweet. There are exceptions though, I like naturally sweet grapes and apples. I don;t think I've done myself any favours really, because I have found now that if I do have things that are sweet, such as mildly sweet apple crumble, or things that have refined starch such as white bread, I get a sugar rush and go shaky. There's virtually no refined carbs or sugar in my diet and I don't handle it too well when there is, probably because I've grown up without it.
Yeah managers, I used to work for a very large company for several years, then left and did some tempring work for eight months for another large company where I worked with many managers. I worked with lovely bosses, bosses who were fine but grumpy, or had quirks, or chips on their shoulders, or would get stressed easily and get snappy, some with a sense of humour, some very serious - quite a range, but I was absolutely fine with them all. Only one was a true bully (at the first company) and he wasn't very high up the corporate ladder, though he thought he was God's gift.... I think sometimes it's the lower managers (of course not all) that go on ego-trips and throw their weight around with the staff, and it's the milder-mannered easy-going folk who are usually the targets. They have a small amount of power and they want everyone to know it! x

Haha, been on here for a almost a year, and have completely overlooked this thread!
I am Jessica, will become an adult at the age of 18 on April 26th. I live in Essex, in the UK. I live with my parents and my boyfriend Drew whom I have been with for 18 months. We live with our two budgies, two guinea pigs, two rats and our snails, in my small bedroom surrounded by dreamcatchers, fairylights and wake up to birdsong every morning.
I have always loved animals, always.
I haven't had the best of childhood's. I am out of work. I want to own a barn owl. I have piercings, and one tattoo. I often have brightly coloured hair, at the moment, my fringe is purple and blue. I have dreadlocks.

Here goes... I'm Lisa, I'm 34 (crikey moses, where did the time go?), and I live in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. I'm separated (since Jan) from my husband of 14 years (been together 17 years), and have just started my divorce (woop!), changed my name the other day so I'm moving forward. I have 5 kids: Emma (16), Sophie (14), and Jack, Joseph and Rebecca (9 year old triplets). They're the light of my life, but also drive me to near breakdown most days, hard work - but worth it! I keep fancy rats, been breeding them for 4 years now, got my NFRS studname last year (see link to website in signature). I'm currently taking a break though, as when I moved, I had to home a lot of them, and I've not got the time to be breeding at the moment. We also have a cat called Mork, he's my stalker, a bit fat silent black neutered boy. He has his mad half hours sometimes, but mostly you'll find him sleeping on something silly - like a newspaper or carrier bag. I qualified as a massage therapist last year, but was topping that up with a complementary therapies course until my husband and I split - so I had to quit. So while I'm qualified, I've not worked as one yet, and plan to go back to college and carry on getting more experience in September. That's about it. Other than my taste for 80s/90s glam rock and metal...and the fact I'm a huge Slash and The Darkness fan... Edited to add: I'm also a big fat diabetic with a dodgy pelvis and a tendency for panic attacks. Just to get in on the ill thing.

I'm always thought of as a freak since I absolutely hate chocolate with a passion. I just... can't stand the taste of cacao mixed with sugar. I can eat tiny, tiny bits of raw chocolate (the stuff you get from health shops) and I do actually like white chocolate, since it lacks the actual cacao part... but the normal stuff people crave for... YUCK! And, hi to the new posters in the topic! I love reading this, it's nice to hear a bit about people's backgrounds.

You cannot be human if you do not like chocolate. I suspect you are of some lizard alien race, infiltrating our planet by hatching from eggs left in volcanoes.
As for white chocolate. It is just solidified milky sugar. And rank.

I like all chocolate, but it doesn't like me, much. Milk and white chocolates are my favourites, but I like dark chocolate with fruit, like the bar with cherries in it.

Ok Iam hollie 26 yrs old. I've got a 10yr old daughter, Amber. I got pregnant with her when I was 14 & 15 when she was born. I also have a 9yr old step daughter. I love animals, get on with them more then people. I also suffer from depression & mental health problems. Iam a recovering drug addict, 4yrs clean now but still on meds to stop me getting ill and wanting to use again. It's a on going battle & will always be apart of me. Iam not ashamed to tell people that as not many people can say they've turned their lifes around from that lifestyle. I lost my home, my daughter, my boyfriend, that was my wake up call. I got clean, got my daughter back, a new house and a new boyfriend. My life is so much different now.

I'm Aimee I'm 24 and have a 2 year old boy called Theo. I'm doing a degree in contemporary fine art practice. I adore it. I dropped out of a Ceramics degree a few years ago and it's weird going back as a mature student but I'm enjoying it so much. Here is some of my latest work.

Very lovely Aimee! I hope everyone here is feeling well, I remember reading through this but looks like I forgot to contribute something! Well, my name is Sadie I'm 19 and from England. I've been looking for a job with no luck for over a year now, it's killing me that I can't move out of my parent's house yet! (Need more room for snails ...And some privacy!) I messed up my school years pretty badly, and although I gave 100% I failed my A-levels 2 years in a row, I've started studying with the Open University part time now, and I would recommend them to anyone because of all the brilliant support I've had I'm doing a lot better with more coursework and less exams. I'm looking to either be a personal assistant/care provider for someone or somebody who cares for those with severe mental health problems. I have been with my partner for four years now, so I can't wait to get a place with him, he likes to look at the snails but he's not big on touching them. I'm a big food lover, I love to cook and bake, and then eat of course! I even like preparing little soups for my snails. I have a huge creative streak and an unmeasurable love for nature. Many of my friends consider me a bit eccentric, but I like it that way. The things that made me a "weird" child have made me an interesting and rare young woman! I'm happy to be there for anyone who needs it, and I love to connect with people so don't be afraid if you fancy a chat

Well this probably won't be read as many posts on here are going back a bit. But here go's,, ok well I'm 32 but feel like 52 ,I live in the northwest of England , the town with a beach and a tower. I moved here from the Worcester. I used to have a tarantula called Matilda , she lived until she was 8 then sadly past away. I've had GALS now for around 4 months it's all a learning curb for me and I constantly worry that I'm doing something wrong , either there to cold or hot , I'm giving them the wrong food etc etc but alas I'm hoping it's just the cooler weather making them less active. I myself enjoy walking, I can walk for miles and miles , I like reading, Dvds, and obviously GALS.
