I bet they are very glad to be rescued! Poor things, sounds like they were close to drowning. At a guess I would say these are Achatina fulica- someone will be able to correct me if not. Fulica are very easy to take care of. The dents and cracks should be heal by themselves as long as the mantle isn't showing, just handle them incredibly gently until healed as the loss of any shell fragments could be a problem. Feel free to post a close up of the damage if you are worried at all. The shells often go white at the end as the snail ages, just due to wear and tear- although I've seen it happen prematurely in snails with a bad diet. You probably have 3 older snails. Just a word of advice- when healthy, fulica breed like rabbits so you may find you have to freeze batches of eggs if you don't want to become overrun with them as they are difficult to sell. Although raising one batch from eggs will be very fun and educational for your kids. Hope this helps a little, and feel free to ask any other questions. Enjoy your new friends, Im sure they are very grateful to you!

Hi Shaydee, I remember when you sold me Sonny I'm so sorry to hear about Vallery - I didn't really know her personally but, from what I've seen on the forum and read, she sounds like she was such a wonderful person. I'm so sorry to hear of such a great loss Hello! I hope you're well? Just one of Sonny's parents is still alive but on his last legs (foot??), mostly sleeping now. Is Pear still going? Thank you so much for your kind words

Hi everyone, I'm not sure if anybody remembers me, I haven't been active here in some years. Some of you who were around back then may also remember Vallery, one of the kindest and most wonderful people I ever had the luck of meeting online. Unfortunately Vallery has passed away after a long and hard battle with leukaemia. She remained positive and cheerful right up until the end, as she always did. I will miss her so much, nothing put a smile on my face like an email or a package from Vallery. Hi there shaydeesnail, In case you don't know who I am, its Jonathan Roberts (AKA axoloa). Vallery was a good friend to all and I am absolutely devastated to learn that she had to battle cancer and has now passed on. I always planned on getting back in touch with her so I could surprise her by visiting her in Ontario. Vallery was actually the person I most hoped to find still active on this forum when I re-joined and I just cannot get my head around the fact that we will never speak again. To this day, I still have a Canadian flag on my wall and a wooden vented pot pourri box with dried lavender flowers inside that she picked herself before sending to me wrapped in the flag - a gift for sending 6x yellow shelled Pleuronte Isabella, and 12x yellow/pink single tone Nemoralis. I somewhat regret the fact that we lost contact when I went away to Mexico and can only try to take some solace in the fact that she is no longer suffering. I know she was suffering long before she got cancer and spent allot of her life wheel chair bound. Wherever she is now, may she rest in peace and be able to continue doing what she loved most - her works of art and her photography. Hey Jonathan! Vallery and I wondered where you'd been! A few years ago we sent a postcard from the both of us to the last address we had for you, we weren't sure if you'd get it though It's heartbreaking to think that we won't get to speak to her again, I know she would have absolutely loved to know how you were doing. Glad I'm not the only one with the Canadian flag in my room! She was so good at picking gifts, always so thoughtful. I still have a box of gifts for her sat on my dining table that didn't get sent off in time that I need to deal with at some point. I hope you and your family are doing good, I'd love to catch up and hear all about your travels sometime.

Though I haven't spoken to you very much, I've been around long enough to remember both of you. I've actually spoken to Vallery on the board sometimes, so this is sad news. R.I.P Vallery. At least we now know why she's been absent. 😕 Ahh Cashell! I remember you She really was great at getting everybody involved and talking on here. I hope you're doing well!

Hi shaydee, I remember both you and Vallery well. Hope you're doing good! Thanks so much for letting us know, although obviously it's extremely sad news. I'd noticed that she stopped posting a couple of years ago and often found myself wondering how she was doing. I'm really sorry to hear that it was because she was unwell. It's lovely that you were able to form such a great friendship via the forum though! Many condolences for your loss. It sounds like she was a wonderful friend. Ahh it's good to see there are still some people I remember hanging around here! She really was a great friend, for a while she would still log on here and have a read even when she didn't feel well enough to post. It made me feel a bit better to read through some of her old posts, I really admire how friendly she was to everyone, I've always been of slightly grumpy disposition but she really brightened the place up I hope you and your snails are doing well!

I keep my margies on a heat mat and they have calcium and varied food but all three from one clutch had the same shell deformity. As of yet I haven't found a way to fix it- I've fixed the shell of a tiger with the same type of growth but the missing growth isn't where the new shell attaches to the old. I unfortunately lost two of the three margies and while inspecting their empty shells it appears that there is a lot of rough shell growth on the inside, and I wonder if this affects them. I have unrelated margies kept in the same tank as my bad shelled one, so I think that this is likely a genetic issue. Hope they are happy and healthy dispite their shells!

Has anybody else tried to sell snails and been accused of selling crosses?? Anyone on here that's seen my albopicta knows that they are just that- albopicta. However trying to sell my my albopicta babies on Facebook groups and Ebay and I'm getting messages and comments left right and centre telling me that my snails are crossed with fulica..?
ARGH! I find this so frustrating as I feel my reputation on these groups has been completely ruined. :<

pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=281296291948The more snails you buy, the cheaper they get so please check my other listings if you want more to get the best deal. I'm currently only offering next day delivery as it's still a bit cool out. Only posting to UK at the moment and selling through my Ebay page as it helps me keep track of how many snails I've sold. Thanks!

Does anyone have experience breeding an albino A. reticulata with a normal one? Just wondering what colour the resulting babies would likely be.

Hey everyone, for quite a while two of my margies have had shell problems, they are siblings. They live with 4 other unrelated margies that seem to be doing really well. I'm assuming thay the problem is genetic as only these two related snails have it, there was another sibling whose shell stopped growing all together and he died a while ago I'm worried that if this isn't fixed the snails bodies will be unable to grow properly and they will end up with other health problems that could be fatal. When I ispected the shell of the other snail I found a lot of rough irregular growth inside the shell around the problem areas. Does anyone have any methods of fixing this sort of shell growth so that the snails can continue to grow. Thanks, have a happy new year everyone!

I've been seeing this for a while now, when I put food in my baby tank (about 100 A. albopicta) few of them go straight for the food. The babies race up the side of the tank and onto the lid right above the food, then they all pile up together until they all fall off and onto the food in a big snail-ball. I thought I was imagining it the first time but I've kept a close eye on them and they do this every time Any idea why? do any of your snails do this? These crazy guys will be for sale when it warms up providing they dont hurt themselves!

Hello and welcome, I haven't been around as much so I think I missed your first introduction :< It's quite likely that your snails arent eating as much because they are a little cold, if your heat mat is on the side of the tank you may need to back the heat mat with polystyrene to stop the heat escaping through the back of the mat. Personally I put my heat mats underneath the tank (mine are 7watt too) and I've had no problems in doing this however there are loads of arguments for both ways so the choice is yours I find that the tank is heated better and the substrate has never gotten hot.

Thanks guys, I was originally shipping them in a small moss/coir packed tub, in a larger tub full of bubble wrap, also wrapped in bubble wrap and then wrapped in a mail bag. I did think of those faunariums, I'm a bit worried that the cost (£5 each) as well as additional weight increasing the postal cost will discourage people. If I can't find a suitable courier it's definitely something I will consider. I'd rather not sell at all than have another baby die

Hello, I've stopped selling snails for the winter now, especially as my last two sales went horribly wrong. I sold two snails each to an Ebay buyer as well as erc on this forum, one of the packages got completely crushed and destroyed, I have absolutely no idea how Royal Mail managed it, they must have thrown something extremely heavy on top. Erc's parcel ended up being sent to the Ireland mail center (!?) I several weeks later I recieved an envelope filled with some of the packaging I sent them in and a letter explaining that they had killed the snails. I'm reluctant to sell snails through the post at all now but I have lots needing homes in spring. I was hoping someone might know of any couriers that accept small inverts for a reasonable price. I'm happy to charge more for delivery but it has to be low enough for buyers to afford it.

Oh Gosh I know exactly what you mean Malacophile. I've given up putting my fulicas hide back, I let them do the decorating. One of mine decided to tunnel through a huge egg clutch and spread them throughout the entire tank. It was so hard to find them all -.-

Yep that's right, snails and slugs tend to munch on carcasses that they find. There are quite a few cats on my block, and whenever one is sick the slugs and snails all surround it and eat it up by the morning, I presume because of the protein in the bits of kibble they puke up? I gave mine some fish but they weren't interested. I haven't tried them with meat yet though, I usually give them boiled eggs for protein

I do the same Wreckoning Most of my tanks are fairly easy to manage with the exception of my baby tank. There are about 100 tiny albopicta in there and all those tiny little poos on the lid and up the side make an absolute mess. To keep things clean don't let the substrate get TOO wet (Keep it damp of course) and wipe down the sides regularly. That way you shouldn't have to do a full change very often at all- I hate cleaning a lot too, Especially with all my baby snails! Try and do extra things throughout the month that make it easier to do your full clean Increasing the ventilation will help get rid of some of the water over time, making the tank lighter as well as keeping it a bit cleaner and free of fungus. More ventilation helps dry up poop so it doesn't turn to pooslime- SO much more pleasant to clean! ^^

I doubt it was the spraying, if the water had that much chlorine in it it would have probably made the snails very ill. I think it's normal for the shell to go a bit white, the very tip of the shell gets worn quite early and as the snail gets older the whiteness might spread. mine are all completely white just underneath the shell near the tail, where the shell has become worn over time, as well as the tips. I wouldn't worry.

First off, I live in the midlands in the UK. I think this little guy may be a Hygromia cinctella, although I thought that they were only found in the south? Could he be any other species? Also- does anybody know how to care for these little guys Also this guy: I found a lot of these in my garden, I've never seen them anywhere else. They are not Oxychilus' even though you can see the light though this quy's shell. They have textured shells and vary in colour from medium brown to almost black, and lack the bluish body of an Oxy. I have no idea what these are! Any help would be appreciated. They are small but quite a bit bigger than Discus snails also, and look very different. Both Oxychilus sp and Discus sp live alongside these snails so I was able to compare them, so there's no way they are the same snails. I'd say they get to about the same size as a medium Oxychilus alliarius. Could they be Trochulus striolatus? Any care information on these guys would be good too Thank you!
