Hi there I think inbreeding affects snails- I've had many snails - some that were inbred with other siblings and as a result they wouldn't grow and tended to suffer from deep retraction problems and pass away early. I don't know how many generations of inbreeding it was though- I think its difficult to measure and would probably take a few generations of inbreeding for any issues to pop up- I don't really know about genetics but its just something I've experienced with inbred snails. Hope this helps

I'm so sorry to hear about Ovi - she was such a beautiful snail it broke my heart reading this post - I've never seen gut extrusion that bad before. She looks like she was very well loved and taken care of and happy in your care. I believe snails know that they are very much loved by their owners. Sending hugs your way

I don't know much about garden snails but are the heat and humidity ok? I think some snails are more sensitive than others

Moss?

I'm not sure about live plants but I swear by sphagnum moss- you can buy it live or in blocks that you can rehydrate with water. Snail love to dig in it and snooze in it. You can buy it from most reptile shops I use blocks of moss that I rehydrate with water- it can dry out quickly though. I spray the moss with warm water in the winter and cool water in the summer- I consider it a snaily essential

I put them on my hand under gentle running lukewarm water (snail skin is much more sensitive than ours and can swell up/bubble if the water is too hot) and let the water drain through my fingers (don't submerge the snail since they breath from underneath their shell and not their mouth). I'll let the water run onto the snail's body- snail skin keeps itself clean so it doesn't need much attention. Don't use soap or any other chemicals to wash snails I use a soft bristle toothbrush to gently scrub their shell- be extra careful around the front of the shell where all the soft new growth is. I then pat the shell dry with kitchen roll and put the oil on - that's how I do it anyways

Hello If your snail had a cuttlebone in the tank its best not to add extra calcium in their food as it can be an overdose of calcium and lead to calcium stones- a cuttlefish bone in the tank is all you need for calcium and they will use it when they need to From the photo those cracks seem cosmetic and like uneven growth or the snail has fallen in the past. What I've found is best for treating a dry or flaky shell is by rubbing natural cold pressed coconut oil or natural olive oil into the shell after the snail has been washed (you can get them from most health food stores such as Holland and Barratt if you are in the UK)

I've had about 10 runt fulicas (jadatzis, rodatzis, regular and albino) housed with others with no problems at all- the only sad thing about runts that I've noticed is that they have a short lifespan and tend to develop deep retraction disorder

I've never bathed my snails in green tea but I imagine it would have to be heavily diluted since snail skin is quite sensitive I had those black flies last summer and they were feeding off the substrate- they grew in numbers fast and were flying all over the room the tank was in and it got really bad. What got rid of them completely was throwing out all the old substrate, cleaning the tank out and putting the snails in a temporary tank with no substrate in- this allowed the remaining flies/larvae to die out

I've fed some of my snails all natural peanut butter with no added stuff in (you can usually get them from health food stores). Some snails wouldn't touch it but others would take big chunks out of it

Whenever my snail's shells are looking a bit dry I gently rub olive oil or coconut oil on them after a bath- helps to moisturize and really brings out the colours in the shell (plus it makes them smell great too!)

Looks lovely. May I give a word of advice? The bowl whilst lovely, I would recommend putting some moss in the bowl and to bury it in the substrate. Because of the height if a snail fell off the wall onto the bowl. The results could be fatal. Just a heads up. Otherwise it's a lovely set up. Good advice- thanks

Nice! That tank looks like a Zoo Med 12"x12"x18". Lots of room to climb in there. Yup it is- great for ventilation especially in this hot weather! It does need spraying more often though to keep the moss hydrated but other than that its great

Hi there, I keep Fulicas and the light isn't necessary- mine are more active in the evenings and at night so maybe try keeping the light off and see if that changes anything?

I wonder why albino skinned snails seem to 'yellow' as they get older? Yes I'm assuming they start to lose teeth on the radula and they stop regenerating new teeth so will only be able to manage soft foods - bless! Sleipnir is such a beautiful snaily! I cant belive he was pulling out hairs the cheeky little man! Shamby (my young Jadatzi) has a shell that already looks old (due to genetics) bless him: create image urlHowever my other Jadatzi who is the same age, Anubis has a healthy shell. Anubis and Shamby aren't related: create image url
