Hiya Rosie. Garden snails (he looks like a Helix aspersa from the photo) will mate when they're ready really. For many this will be a seasonal thing. Misting them in the evenings and keeping them with a fresh supply of food can help. Good luck.

Nice little snail. As ness said, snails will mate if and when they feel like it. There is little a person can do except to make the tank as comfortable as possible for the snail. After that, it's up to the snail.

I have only been able to know my snails have mated by witnessing the act. I leave them alone to lay their eggs in the same tank. I have had to many problems separating the baby snails into a baby tank so This last batch I am leaving in the adult tank for now, until they get bigger and before they start rasping on the adults shells for calcium. vallery

My original first garden snails I had didnt mate for 2 years and I had them from a very early age! They were much smaller than my fingernail lol! I have had them just over 2 years now, so we only just received a first batch of eggs a few months ago. Sadly only two babies survived, but I think that was to do with the fact we removed a plant from the tank which was dying to re-pot it, which is when I discovered the eggs buried against the side of the original pot! So we had to move these eggs as they couldn't stay where they originally were. So I think if they had better conditions and had they not been moved they would have been alright. But from the picture your snail looks quite large already, so I assume its already sexually mature and could mate any time in the near future - providing he has a mate of course! ;D Good luck with your new snail Snailwhale xxo

If you want to encourage them to lay, make sure that they have a lot of substrate that's good for burrowing. It also might help to keep the tank warm (heat pad?) and make sure that it's light from like 6 AM to 9 PM so that the snails think it's summer, like with the seasonal thing. And provide lots of good cuttlefish, because egg-laying takes a lot of calcium. And maybe also make sure that there are a lot of nooks and crannies for the snails to feel like it's safe to lay their eggs.
