I read somewhere else that this is a hoax. There is nothing on snopes about it that I could find. If it isn't a hoax, then it is utterly reprehensible.

So far I've only seen plants in sealed glasses as cell phone straps, they're a big hit in Japan: www.strapya-world.com/products/7229.htmlBut live animals? I sure hope this is a joke, I googled a bit but couldn't find an article or video anywhere, so there's still a fair chance for a hoax, altough I don't doubt some people would actually sell these things...

Google 'live animal keyring China' and they come up.
Love the description on that link! You and your lover can have different coloured keyrings lol. And they are good if you don't have a garden. Erm okay. I wonder how long the plants can live, god they have strange things in China!

I have seen similar things before and don't know how successful these plants are. I notice that one appears to be a cactus and is therefore slow-growing. The thing that puzzles me is surely you would need to allow some natural light in for a good period of each day. The owner of the key-ring would have to leave it out in suitable lighting each day surely? I'm also confused about how a seeled-in plant would receive the correct amount of carbon dioxide? Plants breath in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. How do they do this in a seeled container? Oh and what about temperature? I don't know about Japan but certainly in a climate like the UK I could be out in the freezing cold with my plant key-ring and then come home to a sudden rise in temperature. I wouldn't have thought this would do a plant much good.
As for live animals I have seen Sea-Monkeys being sold with accessories such as watch-like bracelets where you can wear your mini Sea Monkey aquarium while out and about and 'Wow' your school-friends etc..... It's really quite annoying as I feel that pets shouldn't be fashion-items or novely items etc. I'm really not convinced that wearing them around your wrist is going to do them any good and that advertising such an item does not send a good message in ethics and attitudes towards pet-care. I'm on my high-horse today, eh?

One thing that bothers me a bit tough is that all the sites show the same two pictures. They claim that all the necessary nutrients are in the fertilizer, there are probably some growth retarding chemicals aswell. There's also another version of those mini-plants, however they have an air hole and need to be watered: www.strapya-world.com/products/25928.htmlStill, it's hard to believe that this plants will survive for long if you carry them around with you all day. :/ Edit:

I'm on my high-horse today, eh? Not at all; I agreed with every word. I was always led to believe that mankind's job was to take care of the world we live in... some of us seem to go about it in a very strange way! It makes me so angry when people shirk their responsibilities and just exploit creation to make a profit. It's horrible! I'd like to put whoever came up with the bright idea in a sealed bag...

I meant it as a joke.... ……… We know what you mean, Saki, and the answer is this: In China there are only animal protection laws that cover wildlife. There are no laws to safeguard pets, so people can pretty much do as they please.

Yeah, exactly. I think pets should be treated almost the same as the wild.

I think animals should be recognised as vulnerable living things and should be covered regardless. I know it's hard in regard to pests and such, but surely in this day and age we can do more for the people and animals that we share this planet with than we do?

>:(I have seen things here in Canada, candies or suckers with insects and scorpions in them for sale. In P.E.I. I saw baby octopus inside resin glass paper weights I questioned the store owner and my answer was they were real. I don't care what it is from tiny insects to the largest of animals . Up North in Canada they actually sell little stuffed animals mainly little seals made out of seal fur, how bad is that to kill an animal to make little stuffed animal replicas out of that once beautiful living creature to sell to tourists, the same store up North Canada sell raccoon hats the type with the raccoons tail hanging off the back of the hat, even to this day they are selling these things in this store I was once in a mall Up North and there was some sort of craft exhibition in the mall center, one of those tables were selling jewelery made from Beaver, Ra coon and skunk claws and teeth. He was trapping, I questioned him about it all not angrily though because he wouldn't have discussed it with me. That is all he used these trapped animals for the rest went to waste. This is Canada. These things are not coming from china. Up North I have seen Moose horn coat hangers, I could go on and on. It is horrifying to me when I come across this stuff. This is not in the Far north where they depend on animals like this for food these are tourist towns in Muskoka Ontario Canada. Tourist from every country Plus a huge amount from Ontario Canada it is cottage country, they gobble up this stuff and I am sure the locals are buying it as well. I saw a local woman buy one of the pieces of animal claw jewelry. vallery

Reading this made me cry, even if it is a hoax. I always shed tears when I hear of animals dying in the hands of humans, be it a pet that lived a good life and died a natural death or accident (I actually can't read the memorials section of this forum, because I'd cry my face puffy and red; it's kind of embarrassing), or something horrible like live transported food animals or anything... well, you get the picture I guess. My partner makes fun of me for that, but I figure I'm just crying for those who few others, or anyone, cry for. But this... this is beyond horrible. Shows an utter lack of empathy, lack of understanding and lack of respect. This is torture.

Having a big heart is nothing to be mocked for, Pinkunicorn! In my case, I tend to become angry rather than tearful when it comes to cruelty - I wish I could give the sick people out there a taste of their own medicine. I desperately wish we could do something.

For once, I am utterly speechless. This is stupid. If I ever get one I'm freeing the animal inside! I have a fish AND a turtle tank. I just... This is stupid. Humans are monsters. If we look around, there's houses and shops everywhere. Imagine a world without it all. Not to mention the fact that we're not going to evolve to meet our needs because we just build it, destroying everything just to make something that WE like. I'm utterly disgusted with the human race.

I've heard of this with shoes as well- things like this: encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRK8GO4tNvtVyZEFqNAiDk7g8cTleFa4ve5wYoMtwx-EQY6iQAFThankfully in most places having live fish in the shoes was banned, but it's still legal in some places... The poor fish die after a day or two, with no oxygen or food. They also spend their last hours being sloshed around and thrown all over the place as some stupid person stamps around on them. I don't know why people would ever want them in the first place.
