Megas are lovely snails to keep but as Heydihoo says rarely come up for sale. they were once plentiful when they were first collected. Collecting some at that time didn't have an impact on their numbers. However other unfortunate events have caused the numbers to rapidly decline in the wild and due to the fact that they are very slow breeders (they have one or two eggs per time and these may lie dormant for many months before they develop) their numbers are struggling to recover. Sadly they don't readily breed in captivity either. Mine laid a normal egg and a small dot of an egg over a year ago (I think) and they are not developing yet! This is not uncommon. I am planning on keeping the baby if it ever develops. This is a pattern that is common amongst keepers - eggs are rare and young even rarer, and then they are not always sold. Work is underway to get these little snails on the protected species list in an attempt to let their numbers recover in the wild. Basically local people are killing them in an effort to rid their land of Achatina fulica which are a foreign species. Poisoning and mistaken identity are the factors that have descimated their numbers. I recommend to keep a look out on forums and eBay and be prepared to wait years and pay a large amount of money. They used to go for around £25 each but snail prices have a habit of going up and down..... For any up for sale there is likely to be competition from other folk, so look regularly!

mine are currently breeding i have caught them in the act but as ness said getting the eggs to hatch is the tricky part and i shall never know if i have any as i never look in their substrate but i would also keep any babies produced due to their rarity
