I went to the store today to pick up some fish flakes since I wanted to supplement my Helix aspersa's diet with protein and other minerals. The only kinds they had were Wardley's Tropical Fish Flake Food and Wardley's Goldfish Flake Food. I bought the tropical food since it had more protein but when I got home I looked at the ingredients and became a bit concerned.
Here they are:
Fish Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Wheat Flour, Fish Protein Concentrate, Soy Protein Isolate, Rice Flour, Fish Oil, Wheat Gluten Meal, Wheat Germ Meal, Brewer's Dried Yeast, Lecithin, Ground Dried Tomato, Xanthan Gum, Choline Chloride, Astaxanthin, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate, DL-Methionine, Iron Oxide, Anise Seed, Inositol, Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin Supplement, Ferrous Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Ethoxyquin (a Preservative), Zinc Sulfate, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, Menadionesodium Bisulfate Complex, Biotin, Copper Sulfate, Hydrophobic Silica, Vitamin A Supplement, Folic Acid, Potassium Iodate, Sodium Selenate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Cobalt Proteinate.
Out of these ingredients, it's the copper sulfate that worries me most. It's pretty far down the list so I guess there may be very little in the food but until I'm sure it's okay I don't want to take any risks
Also the guaranteed analysis is as follows:
45% Crude Protein (minimum)
8% Crude Fat (minimum)
4% Crude Fiber (maximum)
9% Moisture (maximum)
250 mg/kg Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) (minimum)
Is this food safe to feed to my aspersas? I only have three juvenile snails for now and they were given to me as a gift since there are absolutely no snails around my area. Needless to say I don't want anything to happen to them. If it is safe, how much should I give them and how often? If this fish food is no good, what is a recommended brand? I've visited this forum before and I know some people feed fish food to their snails as a supplement to their diet but I could never find any specific information. Thank you so much
