Hi, Some months ago I bought this snail from an Italian breeder, and he said me it's an Archachatina degneri. But, in my opinion, it isn't! Anybody got an idea what species this is? Length is 95mm. P.S.: Sorry for my bad English, but I'm Italian! Best regards, Nicolò.

From the colour of its columella I would say archachatina marginata var ovum although its shell shape does look too slender for the species

Oh, thanks! I think it's an Archachatina marginata ovum, too... But I'm not sure!

Hi Apocalypse If you go to the homepage of PetSnails click Species on the left hand side and then click again on degneri, you will find an excellent picture of what the species should look like. Your specimen does not have any of the distinguishing features of degneri ( e.g. purplish columella and interior of the lip, very rounded shape, brown shell color including the apex ). I would agree with Heydihoo that you got an Archachatina marginata there............not too sure it its a real ovum form, the apex is white and there is just a hint of brown color on the columella.

Hi, Brunni, and thank you! Yes, I know it isn't an Archachatina degneri... The apex isn't white, it's of the same color as the rest of the shell. So... What sub-specie this is? Not A. m. suturalis and A. m. ovum, I think

........well it is all a question of color on the apex and columella ............. A. marginat marginata = white A. m rginata ovum = orange A. marginata suturalis = pink/red Whilst some forms are usually predominant in certain areas ( e.g. ovum to southern Nigeria), it can happen that these color forms occur haphazardly within normal (i.e. A. marginata marginata ) populations, indistinguishable from them apart from these different colors. Take a look at these 2 shells from a population at Miamia, Ghana. About 50 other shells were also examined, all with white apex and culumella. Attachments:

Well the columella is certainly not white, more a milky-coffee color, so its probably an ovum after all ...........as Heydihoo thought
