So I made my first few posts here in the last few days but the main reason I joined is I was recently given some GALS and am getting rather confused by all the variables and different parts when trying to ID their species. I was given them by a work mate of my mother's whose wife keeps them, she can't help but let some eggs hatch every so often but found no one interested in taking the babies so my mother decided that I would take them (bear in mind I'm an adult male lol) and so I came to have 4 three month old GALS which I named Gollum, GaGa, Hayley and Rumplestiltskin. And though I had no interest in snails at all before receiving them I'm verging on obsession now, I just find them such fascinating creatures. So below is a link to a photo album with a few pictures in it of my awesome new family. If it's not possible to tell anything from the positions let me know and I'll try and get some better ones. s776.photobucket.com/albums/yy48/Lyco499/Snailses/Also, as a bonus question: Cuttlefish bone (in reality their inner shell, look how clever I...wikipedia is ) obviously even though I have 4 snails I don't need a huge full piece, so I broke some off the end and do I just leave it there for them? No need to do anything to it or break it into particularly small pieces or something? Thanks in advance!

No answers to your main question sorry but! What i use instead of cuttle is crushed egg shell mixed with fish flakes which apparently have calcium in. If they dont eat the bone maybe powder it and mix in with some food? Your snailies are gorgeous though! I just have cepea hortensis and aspersa's

Thank you I love capea hortensis, they always seem to have such awesome shell patterns. I actually read that egg shell was good for calcium and because I had to wait for the local pet shop to get some cuttlefish in I did try that first, though missing what now seems quite obvious, I didn't think to powder it and just left a small piece in the tank that got ignored lol. Thanks for the help I only added the cuttlefish to the tank today and only one of my snails has been active since, though not very much, I think I'll leave it a day or two and if they still ignore it I'll try powdering it like you suggested.

they look like Achatina fulica to me, this is what they are most likely to be. as for cuttlefish, my snails have always been happy muching from pieces of cuttlefish. another option is to get some limestone flour and either make a limestone block or to make sure they eat it sprinkle it on their food.

Thanks guys I'm sure your both right. And as for the cuttlefish, they've taken to it now I decided to dig them up (and bring Hayley down from her usual spot on the lid lol) and set them around the cuttlefish and they all went for it with gusto. I can still hear Gollum, the biggest, eating as I type he's so loud already lol.
