I am a little worried. I feed my snails sweet potato, cucumber and other vegetables. They usually get a piece of cat pellets and turtle pellets as well. I've noticed that the pellets is eaten first, and very fast. They also love the Crested Gecko Diet that I feed my gecko, often all of it before he even gets a nibble of it. Shouldn't snails prefer vegetables over meat? Should I let them have more cat pellets? Or not give them that at all? Could they start eating each other if they don't get meat (as I read some other snails would)? It's not only the fulicas, but the reticulatas as well.

It depends on the species whether a snail would prefer vegetables over meat. Some snails eat only decaying vegetation, others eat a combination of fresh and decaying vegetable matter and still others eat anything at all decaying. (And, of course, some are predatory and will actively hunt other invertebrates.)
If they were my snails, I would let them have the cat pellets a little more often but still offer fruit and veg for them at the same time, and let them choose.

Thank you! I hope they'll leave the gecko food for the gecko if they get more cat pellets.

Tsrebel, my snails do the same . They also love mash made of fish food (those flaked one) and water... I guess they just eat the most nutritious food we offer them, right? I also feed them vegetables and fruit, but why not to give them what they like most? I think snails canĀ“t be obese, can they?

I have never heard of an obese snail.

They got to stay in shape to fit back in their shell. No couch potatoes here.

Brunni, you just reminded me of those guys who think they're fat and make themselves really skinny. Then with the snails, I thought of preamble where they suddenly get too small for their shell. O.O

Preamble means the introduction section of a document.

Many snails are omnivores when they get the chance. The first meal a snail eats is it's own shell complete with any gooey remains and appear to need this protein. They appreciate some protein when they're older too.

A very large number of god's creatures are /can be carnivorous and prey on their own kind, dependent of local conditions ( i.e. as the need arises ). This would seem to be a built-in genetic code that may be triggered anywhere between normal to special circumstances. Our own kind - Homo sapiens - would feature alongside a multitude of species in this list.
Its one of mother nature's stock-in-trade !

Well, there are tribes that practise (or used to practise) cannibalism so it's not a mere possibility for humans. For most cultures it's a taboo, of course, but given the right circumstances who knows what taboos we'd be ready to break.

I'm interested in the preamble bit. Too small for their shells ?

A little update: It turned out my snails were mislabeled by the seller. They are really A. immaculata var. panthera. That makes sense!

Yes, that makes sense. There was at least one thread here, several years ago, about someone's pantheras rasping on the other snails.

Yes I know. Feel very fortunate that mine didn't rasp on other snails yet (maybe because they get so much cat food). Now I'm working hard to get another tank finished to house my retics (they are with the immacs now).

Ooops! It's not the first time that's happened. More often though it's the other way around, as fulica are mislabled as being immaculatas, reticulatas and tiger snails! Glad all is well though
