One of my large fulicas and one of my juvenile marginatas shells are starting to go thin, they have constant supply to plenty of cuttlefish but I was wondering about putting some extra calcium, in the form of powder, onto their food. What is the best I can use and where can I get it fast?

I'd say 50/50 mix of oyster shell flour and limestone powder. made into a calcium block on top of a cuddlebone. (about 1/4 inch on top.) I am on my third month of testing this and the calcium consumption is easily 150% consumption of a normal limestone powder block or cuddlebone itself, and more like 200% go on google and type in oystershell flour and order it, or type it in with your area maybe to find something local. if you want it fast you can go to a healthfood store and buy calcium tablets that say on them they are made from oystershell, and put them in a spice grinder or mortar and pestle and grind them into powder.

Agreed with FogHog's suggestion. As well as trying different calcium sources there are things that can interfere with calcium absorbtion, such as acidity in the soil and various food. There is an excellent thread somewhere on food affecting calcium, please wait a moment and I'll try looking it up..... petsnails.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=feeding&action=display&thread=8809 This thread points to a chart where you can check the Oxalate level in food (Oxalate intereferes with calcium absorbtion)

Thankyou, I have checked the list and the foods I feed most are low oxalate. Will get some oystershell flour and limestone powder.
