My house is quite cold, the snails are in my lounge in front of the radiator, they have a heat mat but I cant seem to get the temperature above 20 degrees. The snails are in a huge storage tub, can I safely put a heatlamp into the habitat?

This can be a problem. Some folk use heat lamps outside of the tub so a gentler heat is diffused into it, though I have never tried it. I would be uneasy using one inside the tub itself but if anyone has done so successfully then hopefully they will give you tips. If I was try this I would use a plastic mesh guard so that the snails don't burn themselves on a metal guard, and would position the lamp at one end only. I suspect the heat may be too intense though. Have you tried sitting your tub on a thick layer of polystyrene and insulating the lid and sides with bubble-wrap? Also drilling small holes in the side where the heatmat is may help to get more of the heat inside the tub.

If you do choose to get a heat lamp, I would say that you for sure should keep it on the outside of the tank because I've burned myself on those before and I can't imagine what it would do to the snail if they crawled over it... if you do already have a heating mat then I guess getting another one wouldnt do much, but I generally like them more because they help create more humidity by warming from underneath vs what I guess would be more of a dry heat from the lamps
