Hi
I can not get my cepaeas to eat anything but english cucumber and they leave the rind. They get crushed brown egg shell and they eat that fine but I have tried so many other vegetables and all they will eat is the cucumber center and they devour that so fast. This can't be good. They have hostas in there terrariums but don't eat those either just hang around on them. I supply them with old leaves and wood chips and whatever I've collected from their natural habitat, they seem to spend a lot of time on the old leaves as though they are eating them but they aren't. Would there be something on the leaves they are eating? anyone have cepaeas? Any Ideas about this? I would appreciate it. Add in: I should mention that before I introduced the english cucumber to my snails they did eat other vegetables like celery and kale etc. but once I gave them the cucumber they wouldn't eat anything else I put in, just left it to rot.

I haven't had any experience with keeping cepaeas, but I think they are just very picky, like my snails will not eat iceberg lettuce.

Thanks saki Just worried they might not get all they need from one vegetable alone. What types of vegtables are you feeding your helix aspersas?

You could try some reptile food for herbivore reptiles. All my snails, including Cepaeas, love gecko diet. It may be a little expensive compared to other snail food, but if you are worried about them getting the vitamins and minerals they need, this could be a good supplement. Good luck!

If the problem is that they are picky, you might end up with them demanding reptile food though.

That's certainly worth noting. Is this come kind of food pellet?

The only way I got my snails to stop ignoring other foods in favor of cucumber was to stop giving them cucumber completely. That's when they had no choice but to try the other foods I was offering them, and they discovered that they actually did like other things such as Romaine, sweet potato, pumpkin seeds, etc.
If you try this, your snails may not eat anything you offer for a couple of days, but don't worry, that won't hurt them. Eventually they will try the new foods and find things they like. You must be firm about no more cucumber, though, if you want them to eat other things.

The gecko diet is a powder you mix with water. You can dip other food in it, and the snails always eat a little more than just the "coating". Here is a video of one of my iredaleis eating it: youtu.be/WYIrNzi7MSQThey do prefer this over any other food, so be aware. But, unlike cucumber, it is full of vitmins and high in nutritional value.

Thanks for the information. Wow that's a lovely set-up you have there for your Iredalei I'm impressed.

Thanks! :-) It's so much fun to make the snail's homes nice parts of my home. It's less than 6 months since I made it, but I hope to make it a self sufficient ecosystem as much as possible. I'll make a thread to show off when I get the time.
