I was wondering why you can't view some of the photos posted. That it has exceeded it's limit. Will this change or be fixed? vallery

Has anyone else been unable to view others photos they have posted or been unable to post photos for others to view? Does anyone know why this is happening and if it will be fixed? vallery

starcrazy19 mentioned this aswell. Paul will have a much better idea than me but if anyone could add any information which would help that would be great! I have been able to view photos others have uploaded. It could be the method of upload or maybe the browser? Can people say which browsers they are using, which threads they can't see photos on and how they tried to upload photos I can see photos using both Firefox and IE Threads i looked at and could see photos: petsnails.proboards.com/thread/13148/stripey-aspersas-pretty and petsnails.proboards.com/thread/13144/snail-pregnant

Right OK. So can everyone see the cactus and the flower? They were added from a website url using two different methods. I've copied the text that appeared when i tried to add an attachement which failed. Are images added as attachments the only images people cannot see and cannot uplaod? My guess would be when the forum changed an attachment limit was added and backdated to every attachment added ever and perhaps the loss of photos is of those added as attachments before the change but are now over the limit (complete guess there though)? I'll contact paul but in the meantime people may be able to upload photos via website urls (e.g. upload to flickr and then copy the image location into the insert image option)

I've looked and the problem is the forum has reached its storage limit. We're actually 55% over the limit which is now being enforced with the recent upgrade. The price of more storage is pretty expensive and bizarrely the economy of scale works in reverse... so it gets progressively more expensive, the more use use. We'd hit that issue again in no time so that options needs to viewed cost-wise with a longer term view. I can empty the image store, but that would result in threads having missing images. So I'm not sure what the best course of action is really.
Do we empty the cache, do we find a way to fund it, or do we ask people to use all the image-serving sites like photobucket etc?
What are everyone's thoughts?

Personally I think it would be better if people used the image storing sites. I've uploaded hundreds of pictures onto imageshack.us for free and never had a problem, it also means we can put multiple images onto one post. I think a few people are unsure how to use those websites though.

Would deleting certain threads help at all? I have started some threads that really haven't gotten much attention and It wouldn't bother me if those threads were deleted. Also It is nice to have the new Aquatic section but that wouldn't bother me to have that removed. Also it is nice to have the other pet section but I would be okay with that being deleted as well. I am not sure if this would help. Or if others would agree. Just a thought. vallery

I've always used image hosting sites (specifically flickr just because that's what i started with many many years ago). So i personally am happy for image sites to be used. Even if we delete lots of images it will just fill up again and we will be back in the same position before too long. If we opt for asking people to use image sharing sites i think a detailed sticky thread should be produced stating what sites are available, how to get the image location url and how to enter that into a thread then people will not be put off by the prospect of doing that. People who have used specific sites could also give info for that site (incase there's little niggles that need to be overcome to get the url or uploading etc etc)

I usually link to images on my blog because I like to add more images in one post. The downside with everyone using remotly hosted images is that these companies may shut down or people may close their account. It annoys me when an image that is used to explain something is missing in an old thread. It would be nice if such important images could be uploaded here, but everything else linked from elsewhere. That would require a real clean up. I would agree to the other pets section to be deleted.

Please don't get mad at me, but what about raising some funds with small fees for classifieds? vallery

I think charging for classified would probably just drive people away. We could always have adverts on the forum (maybe we do already my ad blocker can be too efficient at times!) we could always see if shops wanted to advertise (a bit like at the top of RFUK).
I don't know how much money we are talking though and if it gets more expensive with more pictures then we will always have the same problem reoccurring...
I think uploading to a image hosting site to post images is best and then if an image/thread is seen as a useful reference thread then uploading the key images only to the site (i don't know if this is possible maybe limiting uploads to reference threads or limiting who can do it or something??)

Yes! Shops selling snail related items would be great.
