I have heard that you can tell if your snail is fully grown by a white lip on its shell. Is this correct and can anyone show me a picture so I can recognise it. I am only asking out of interest because I have some really big snails and I am wondering if they are going to grow anymore or if they are fully mature. Also am I correct in thinking that they are sexually active when they are adults my tigers have never shown any interest that way but I still do think of them as babies. Thank you I have learned loads from this website and look a few times a day.

Hi snailbaby, Yes it's true that many species of snails grow a thickened lip at the entrance to their shell when they reach maturity. It's not necessarily white though. Here's a Wikipedia article about the lip in snails that has some info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lip_(gastropod)It's slightly difficult to explain exactly what the lip looks like but generally it is a tougher line of shell around the shell entrance (where the snail's body comes out) that usually turns outwards slightly. In younger snails that are still growing, this area around the shell entrance is usually softer and thinner where their shells are still growing. I found a photo online that shows the lip on an aspersa - you can see around the shell entrance where the shell is a little thicker and slightly turned outwards. www.quirksee.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/DSC_4626.jpgHope this helps

White-lipped snails and neohelix albolabris (I keep these) are a good common example for where the white lip forming is true.
