Hi there. I am new to snails and my terrarium just arrived in the mail today! I'm a little disappointed, I was picturing it to be a bit bigger. Hopefully it's big enough for my helix snails I'm getting. Anyways I got it all set up tonight and used topsoil and ivy and a terra cotta pot for hiding and sleeping. I am pretty happy with it aside from the size. Now I can go ahead and get my snails! I just need to get a few small dishes and a spray bottle and I think I am good to go! Anyone have any suggestions for a new snail owner? I have been lurking a bit so I think I've learned quite a bit. Michaela

I agree with morningcoffee, your set up looks very nice, you could add a stick and or some moss as well as snails seem to like this.

morningcoffee - Thank you for the tip. I had covered the top with soil to try to soften the area but I didn't think to look for a plastic one. I will look this week for one!
Zorst - do you grow moss like as a groundcover in your terrarium or just put it in there in handfulls? Sorry if that's a silly question. Ah yes! Sticks are a great idea. Will do that today!

I do both I collect mine from the stones on my land n wash it well, when I collect it I try to keep it as intact as possible so it survives. Most of the time it stays alive n then just carries on growing in the tanks.
Other times I have just had to use what I could buy in the pet store this doesn't last as long as trying to keep live moss growing.

Do you have a picture of yours? I have some moss growing outside on my property in some shade that I think I could bring in as long as you think it's safe?? I am not sure what kind it is. It's very carpet like and dense. All I need to do is wash it well? I don't spray any pesticides or anything.

Somewhere on here is a calculator that you can put in the dimensions of your tank and it will tell you how many snails it can hold. I think the snails you are getting will get no larger than 3 CM (the shell). Also not sure where you live but here in the states we have something called a Goodwill. It is a place that has second hand things. I went there and got my tank. It only cost me 7 USD. It had a metal mesh lid that I replaced with the kind of screen you put in windows.
The tank I got, from the toys inside, looked like it had been used for a Ginny pig. I just bleached it out really well and then rinsed it with water that had de-chlorinator in it.
Have fun with tyour new pets when they come.

Update: My husband was out hiking yesterday w/ our dog and his buddy and they had sat down to take a break and relax. And a little snail was crawling by his foot! He knew of course that I was getting ready to get snails for my terrarium so he brought her home! She's been super relaxed around us so far. She even slept in her terrarium outside her shell last night: Here she is hanging out outside her terrarium so I could get an upclose picture:

Thank you both! Not yet. They hadn't been sent yet so I am holding off since she is much bigger than those and I'm not sure if they can be kept together or not. Have to figure that out first. How are your snails doing?

She looks like a lot Neohelix albolabris, and the sizing would be right for that species. If that's the case, she can be safely kept with other, smaller species. Hopefully someone else can confirm or correct the ID.

My snails are quite all right, I'm hoping to locate some moss myself too! Too bad that where I'm staying right now, it's hard to find. Yesterday I also held a young (3cm shell) Achatina achatina, he was sleeping in his shell but still so pretty.
