After I sprayed my snails this morning they went walkabout on the tank lid. One end was in sunshine and the other end led back into their tank. They chose the end that was in sunshine - they seemed to really enjoy it, their necks were fully extended and they stayed in the sunny place for quite a long time. Just thought I would pass this on.

I let the sun stream in for a few hours in the morning which they seem to enjoy. I suppose with them being cold-blooded it warms them up and makes them active. There is no risk as long as the tank is humid.
I think snails do need some sunshine, I know UV fades their shells but some of mine do seem active during dusk and dawn as many animals are; they're not exclusively nocturnal. In the wild, snails do have faded shells which suggests they spend time in the sun. Plus, animals get vitamin D from sunlight (well, not exactly but you know what I mean), even nocturnal ones so surely snails are no exception.

Do you want me to sit in the corner and rust, or just fall apart where I'm standing?

My snails love the sunshine. I take them into the garden sometimes. Not for long tho because it's rediculously hot here at the moment but as long as there not in direct sunlight for to long, frazzaling away, and as long as they have plenty of water mine enjoy it.

My snails now have their own 'sunning mat' I use a piece of capillary matting, soak it through and then lay it on top of our garden table, they were on it today and they absolutely love it. If you could describe a snail as sunbathing then these two certainly were, they were stretching their necks out as far as they could.

p.s. You can buy capillary matting at any garden centre.
