My snail nibbles me. Is this normal? Yes. He's just seeing if you're food or not as he probably doesn't recognise the mysterious substance, skin

Yes, completely normal for snails to nibble you Guys, my snails seem to like crushed eggshells, but I haven't thought about giving them actual meat. Is it safe to give normal garden snails (with plain flat shells, no patterns) eggs and other forms of meat?

Eggshell is a good source of calcium for snails, and they will also eat the skin on the inside, some snails will also eat hard-boiled eggs. I wouldn't give them anything raw though, you don't want them to catch salmonella. And I don't think they would eat meat.

I am not disagreeing with tenebricosa, however; I think it is necessary to just mention that while egg shell is a good source of calcium, it is very hard for a snail to 'convert' egg shell into 'positive shell growth' without high levels of vitamin D (which depending on the species, is more likely to come from mushroom/fungus than action sun rays). Also feeding boiled egg is not recommended as a regular part of there diet. While boiled egg is not particularly harmful it is unhealthy and addictive. The white takes a long time to digest and so the snails overall appetite may be reduced leading to lack of other important vitamins. While some protein now and again can be beneficial, unless the snail is of a predatory species, it is not something that needs offering unless the snail has some kind of tissue damage, which should not be an issue unless dealing with a rescued snail, carnivorous attack or love dart gone wrong.

Oh I didn't know that they needed fungus for their vitamin D. Isn't there any vitamin D in eggshells though? I know eggs contain some vitamin D, although not as much as mushrooms, and I would guess they have some in their shells, don't they? I have had a juvenile for a bit more than a month (I think it was aroung 3 or 4 months old when I got it, and it's a species that takes 1 year to reach their adult size), I never fed it mushrooms and only give it spinach and eggs as a calcium source and it's growing very quickly with no issues. Its shell is strong and the snail itself is lively.
