A picture would be very helpful, so we can determine how bad it is and how you can help.

I will be able to get a pic when I get home in the evening, and he has a cuttlefish in the tank but I don't think he's been eating much of it recently as his new shell is quite brittle

New shell is quite brittle that's normal. If you are unsure if he has been eating his cuttle you could try putting a tasty food such as moist fishflakes on it to introduce him to it (some snails who have not encountered cuttle before often don't rasp at it)

Sorry I didn't send a pic last night, I will make sure I get one this evening though. And he has eaten his cuttle fish in the past so maybe I just need to buy a fresh one.

He's a giant African land snail by the way, if that helps

That isn't a mantle tear! It's perfectly normal! That is his breathing hole and is compleatly normal!

As magoandlemon said it's the pneumostome or breathing hole. there's nothing wrong with your snail except is that vermiculite on his tail are you keeping him on that? If so it's really not a good substrate at all and can cause a lot of problems. for starters they need to be able to have a substrate they can consume to recycle benificial bacteria

Its normal! Oh thank you so much, I'm relieved! Phew. Sorry I was being so naive, I love him to bits bit I'm no snail expert >> and yes its vermiculite. I would much rather have him on soil but my parents brought my bags of the stuff and I can't really afford to change it atm. As soon as its been used up I'm changing to soil so I can begin to put some plants in his tank I do make sure its been soaked and moist so it doesn't dry out. But I am not a fan of it

Agreed that's his breath hole, coir is a good substrate I've changed all my tanks onto it now I have finally found a good supplier, the snails here are all doing very well on it. The snails I have from the sand dunes have a bit of sand mixed in the there coir and have taken to it really well.

I just looked up some prices for the coir litter on amazon, looks good! I'll get that for him when I next clean his tank
