I have found some pond snails living in some puddles and I was wondering if any of you know how to care for them? They are quite small. Thanks!

I have found some pond snails living in some puddles and I was wondering if any of you know how to care for them? They are quite small. Thanks! k I have kept pond snails before and was quite successful. Keep them in a aquarium with a lid . I was cheap and got a 1 gallon pickle jar and tin foil. Treat the tap water with Betta Safe or collect rain water . Feed leaves and or algae wafers. Add gravel to the bottom. Add pond snails! Mine laid many eggs . Clear jelly with little dots inside but they never hatched . If you want you can add a rock . Clean when it's smells or is visibly dirty . Don't wording too much about bad water quality , pond snails thrive in it! Good luck! P.S. They don't have a realitively long life span . I think you could feed them to the rosy wolf snail ?

Thank you! I do not have the mind to feed snails to snails, the rosy eats clam only.

Ok I took one out of the puddle, named it Puddle and he is doing very well. Unfortunately the puddles are gone so I can't find more.

Go to the lake or pond and look along the rocks which are partly or full submerged for them . Or in the shallows. I'm glad you don't feed the rosy snails snails I just couldn't

Is it small species like Physidae? Those seem to be incredibly easy.
In the greenhouse I work at we have some flooded tables with aquatic plants growing in them and somehow these types of pond snails established a colony there. No one feeds them, adds calcium, and we just fill the aquatic plant table with tap water. The pond snail population is still persistent after many years.

Hi mangoandlemon,
yes, might be some species of the family Lymnaeidae. Where is the snail from (which state)? How large is it (hight of shell)? How do the tentacles look like? Does the snail have an operculum? Perhaps we can narrow it down....... . Have a good time, kind regards: wolf

Hello wolf! Glad you saw this. He is from Florida, ½ of a centimeter, he does have a operculum. I will get a pic of his tentacles when he comes out.

Hi mangoandlemon, you wrote: " he does have an operculum". Thanks a lot, that changes anything........ . So it's not Lymnaeidae nor any other basommatophora. There are several species of Hydrobiidae in Florida (genus Cincinnatia and others) which are all rather small (up to about 5 mm). I think you will know: THOMPSON, F.G. (1984): Freshwater Snails of Florida - A Manual for Identification -- University of Florida Press GainesvilleA few years ago this paper was available via internet. If not, I can try to send you the paper via normal E-Mail. Have a good time: wolf
