What wood is safe ?

I'm new to the forum ...I have a question and hope I've put it in the right place..

I have two garden snails..I'm wondering if I can use maple tree wood for my snails ?
My son has a fire place and he cuts wood for it that is maple..can I use that and if so is there
something I should do before putting it in their aquarium ?
