How do you pronounce all the names of these snails Some are obvious, like zebra etc. But I get the feeling how I think they are pronounced is totally wrong lol. ;D Is achatina 'ach' or 'ak'. Brads going to be asking me and I want him to learn anyway so best to teach him right Thank you Nat Just altered the title - paul

Do you want me to sit in the corner and rust, or just fall apart where I'm standing?

I pronounce it as "Ack" rather than "Ach".
But fulica could be pronounced "Foolica", "full-ick-a", "ful-aye-ka". I have heard all three and I wondered myself. When I kept stick insects years ago, the book I had said not to worry about pronunciation because many modern latin names have no proper pronunciation. Don't know how true that is.
I did find out that the smithii in Achatina smithii would be pronounced smith-ee-aye, well based on latin plant names with 2 i's on the end.

So, I pronounce Lissachatina fulica as "Liss-ackateena full-ick-ah" though I'm not sure that is 100% correct. Have a look at the following that I have just found: www.saltspring.com/capewest/pron.htmpaul

Just read another page that says there are many differing but correct ways of pronouncing latin names, provided you don't succumb to standard english pronunciation. How this applies to snail names I haven't a clue.

I guess english speaking people will pronounce latin names differently than people who speak germanic or latin languages(ie Italian). As far as iredalei is concerned....it is named after a Mr. Iredale so you probably say it the english way then stick an i on in the end ;D
